General Guidelines 1. No study guide can possibly cover all topics/items in every conceivable way that they might appear on the exam. Thus, even though something is not on this guide, it is still “fair game”. a. The exam material will cover topics, issues, and concepts discussed in class. b. Use the questions asked during group work or class discussion to guide review of the material found in the weekly readings. 2. The exam will include multiple choice, true/false, short answer, matching, and fill-in-the-blank. 3. In general, you should be able to do the following: a. Match a person with his/her major accomplishments, theory, and/or concepts. b. Recognize examples, definitions, and relationships between concepts as they pertain to sociology. c. Provide examples and definitions as they pertain to sociology. d. Be able to list and explain any “steps” or processes associated with a term. Part II. Terms. More complex than terms. (Please don’t assume these will appear as short answer questions.) 1. What are social norm? What are the different types? Why do most people follow the social norms most of the time? How are social norms internalized? Social norms are present in every society. They are what are considered “normal” or “right”. They may be rigid or flexible, explicit or implicit. Most people follow these norms because its subconscious. It eases our way through the day and we only realize when someone DOESN’T follow a norm. social norms are internalized because there are no universal norms. 2. What factors influence whether a behavior is considered deviant? What factors influence whether an individual gets the master status of deviant? How does deviance promote both social change and social stability? Behaviors are considered deviant when they go against social norms. Rules cause deviance. When someone’s identity becomes “deviant” or “freak”, it is used to discredit them. Deviance promotes change because when enough people stray from the norm, the deviant behavior becomes the new norm. 3. How are values, norms, and sanctions related? Values are standards that people use to define good and bad. Sanctions are the reactions to the way people follow social norms. 4. Be prepared to briefly discuss the various research methods utilized in social research. What are the principles of ethical research? Surveys, observations, experiments, interviews. 5. Why is the scientific method emphasized? Why is the use of good research methods essential to good science (and especially social science)? Describe the common ways of obtaining knowledge or decision
