The pair are expecting about 400 Islanders and visitors for a night of food, wine, music, art, new jewelry selec- tions—and valet parking. Soli and Andre will provide entertainment, while award-winning designer Maiya Dabrowski and the world-renowned Charles Krypell will be on hand to meet guests and discuss their latest lines being sold at Lily & Co. The Island Appreciation gala gives Schuyler and Bell a chance to unveil the latest renovations additions made to the store in time for the upcoming season, including Rob Pailes' photography on canvas. It also allows them to express gratitude to their customers for making their business a big suceessl ,: "As most people are aware," Schuyler said, "Karen and I are truly appreciative of the Island ajid the resources here, and we're just grateful we can give back to the community, because it's given back to us so much in the past year-and-a-half that we've been here. Karen and 1 are constantly out in the community and giving to the charities. We just think that being on the Island it's important that we give, so we're happy to throw a party in appreciation to everyone on the-Island." The store's two popular canine mascots, Lily Bell and Gracie Schuyler, are not expected to be in atten- dance; however, Dan Schuyler assures everyone "they will be here in spirit." Let's give thanks that we live in an island paradise called Sanibel that provides a life style we are eager to embrace. Nature, beaches,,, blackened fish, Cheeburgers and wildlife (not nightlife) are all part of the Sanibel mystique. If you happen to be on Sanibel during Thanksgiving ' and start carving your, blackened turkey, you need to give thanks that all seasonal hur- ricanes have passed us by yet another year. No Charleys or other innocent sounding first names to come along and blow our roofs off or tear our hearts out. We can look around us and marvel at the vegeta- tion, houses and structures that were spared the wrath of powerful hurricanes this year. If you're a returning snowbird about to leave your frozen tundra behind you need to give thanks to the ideal weather that awaits you in Sanibel. Temperatures have been moderate, humidity low.and the golf courses ready Be gratefql that your golf hand- icap won't prevent you from dreaming about that hole in nine. Bow your heads and give thanks to the next six months you will be spend- ing in Sanibel as your friends and neighbors up north deal with ice, freezing temperatures, huge oil bills, and mountains of snow in front of their houses. Give thanks to the grand- children who will be visit- ing with you dur- ing Thanksgiving. See them grow up in front of your very eyes. Envision what they will be like 20 years from now when they've graduated from college and work- ing on careers, marriage and par- enthood. Don't be grumpy if the little one whom you envi- sion to be our 52nd presi- dent spills his glass of milk on your favorite shorts. He just needs a few years to learn about national defense and foreign policy. Be thankful for the gen- erosity of spirit and commu- nity involvement that is part of the Sanibel way of life. Thank your friends and neighbors for all that they do to sustain a spirit of com- munity that is unique to us on Sanibel. Smile warmly when one of your neighbors allows you to make a left tum on Periwinkle with a line of traffic behind him. Be grateful that you and your family have chosen the one community that is so uniquely different from other communities that the Sanibel Stoop will become the next dance craze. Be thankful that our new bridge seems to have worked out well in the end despite the turmoil and dis- putes that were a central part of its original planning. Even though there was a difference of opinion on what the bridge should look like as well as on if we even Shell Shocked Art Stevens needed a new bridge at all it has blended in well. The bridge is here, the new toll booths installed and disputes have already been largely forgotten as the traffic flows in and out better than ever. Be thankful for the new over- passes on San Carlos and Gladiolus that enable us to get to and from Fort Myers in less time. Thank the Lee County engi- neers for having come up with the designs that are both aesthetically pleasing as well- as truly functional. We can now get to the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall to marvel at a gracefully aging Engelbert Humperdinck a lot quicker and not have to worry about Fort Myers Beach traffic as much. Be thankful for the steps being taken by the Sanibel City Council to beautify our beaches and remove the dreaded red algae. The beaches are ready for high season and will once again attract many visitors to our shores in time for shell col- lecting, sunning and long walks. The fact that all our red algae has been con- signed to Los Alamos, New Mexico for nuclear testing shouldn't deter us at all. Thanksgiving is a time to take stock and be grateful for the good times, the warm moments and the pleasures of life. When I think of Thanksgiving I always think of that great Rolling Stones song -. "You Can't Always Get What You Want". There's always a list of things we don't have and covet. Yes, I had hoped to own a Lamborghini Murcielago by now but the Dodge Stratus runs perfect- ly well. During Thanksgiving we have to push that list away and look around us. Here we are in Sanibel and aren't we just fortunate to be here? When yon consider we could have made a wrong turn and wound up in Pensacola that alone should give us pause. Thanksgiving in Sanibel is truly something special. Enjoy the moment, friends and neighbors, and carve a good turkey. And don't expect me to be this serious next time around. We never personally owned pigs, but always had pet dogs* cats, ducks, even a goose I kind of remember. (I think I blocked it out because it became Thanksgiving dinner); We lived adjacent to my grandpar- ents farm where they raised everything, but mostly dairy cows. So I grew up rural and still have rural in my blood. I guess that's why Sanibel readily appealed to me. I did the Mary Tyler Moore "you're-gonna-make-it-after-all" thing for 10 years (in Minnesota's Twin Cities no less), and was immediately ready to get out of town. . What was your education like? < I was already into journalism in high school, and my beat was a humor column for our monthly magazine. It was a Catholic school in very Catholic Dubuque, Iowa, and I remember getting into trouble with the journalism teacher (a priest) for not deleting a comment about a girl "falling out" of her dress at the autumn Fall-Out Festival. I started out post'-secondary at the College of St. Catherine (a.k.a. St. Kate's) in St. Paul, and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a major in French and a minor in Community Journalism. .. .' What was your first job? I started my writing career as editor of a weekly in a small community outside of the Twin Cities where people had such thick Scandinavian accents it was hard to under- stand them—(lutefisk and uff da) and all that. I did every- thing from covering city council meetings to. taking sub- scriptions. What do you do professionally when you're not writing books? Today as a freelancer, I need to diversify to survive—• everything from "Ding" Darling Wildlife Society publicity to web-content for Conde Nast's Concierge.com and travel pieces for Miami Herald. I'm Cuisine & Travel Editor for Times of" the Islands and restaurant review for Naples Illustrated. My most exciting new project puts me in the position of writer-producer for WGCU Public TV's new CONNECT series debuting in January. How did you get into travel writing arid what does it entail? I waited tables at McT's and worked at Big Red Q Quickprint (are you happy Barry that I finally admitted to that?). So in other words, it started after I moved south to Sanibel. 1 began by traveling, of course, which l've-been doing since before I can remember. My dad was a truck driver who liked nothing better on his one week a year off than to drive cross-country with four kids in a black-and-white 1956 Ford Customline. I always kept a travel journal—really boring stuff about what we ate: and where we camped. When I moved here, I started sending things to local and travel publications until someone final- ly decided I was publishable. Then it sort of snowballed from there. I got into doing guidebooks, which .is more about being totally detail-oriented, thorough, and anal than creative. But that has'allowed me to spin off and make something of a name for myself in Florida and Caribbean travel writing. ' ' ..-. . '•'..'.... What do you love about travel writing? Whafare your biggest challenges? What do I love about it? In two words: travel and writ- ing. My husband keeps telling me I need a hobby because I work too much. I tell him, my hobbies- are traveling, writ- ing, and cooking (cuisine writing is a secondary specialty). What could possibly be moie fulfilling than getting paid for your hobbies, for what you love7 The challenges'? Pie-waining I get no sympathy if I complain. But just envision sliding down bat-guano slick steps on your butt in a cave in Trinidad. Okay; that's all I'm going to say. The true downside (no pun intended) is being away from my family as much as I must. Do you have any books coming out soon? I have written eight or so travel guides and contribute to several others, including Fodor's Florida and Bahamas guides. Two of them are what I call "mine" meaning I make royalties off of them. I update them every couple of years. It just so happens that two of them release this winter. My favorite, "Sarasota, Sanibel Island & Naples Book: A Complete Guide," is out in its fourth edition now. My Adventure Guide to Tampa Bay & Florida's West Coast is due out late January 2008. * When and why did you move to Sanibel? I lived in Minnesota—need I explain'.' Thai was late 1981 when 1 moved here. I had friends who had been visit- ing seasonally for a few years working construction and the restaurants. When one of them decided to stay, I called her up and said' I was coming. I moved down sight unseen exactly 26 years ago in November, and we lived above the Dairy Queen for that winter. I was 26, unmarried, and ready for a change—preferably warm. It was one of my best deci- sions in life. What do you enjoy and appreciate most about Sanibel? ' That has changed over the years. It started with the usual —.sun and sea. Right now, because I'm so involved with "Ding" Darling Wildlife Society. I really have come to cel- ebrate the people on this island who are committed to con- servation and environmental education. That's who I've always been, stemming from my rural Girl Scout youth. I've come to realize that people who are invested in our natural preservation are the purest, best kind of people you'd want to know and work with. They have so much to impart in their own quiet way. What is your life like now? My husband, Rob, has provided incredible support for me, despite the fact that he's constantly jealous that he can't always travel with me. (He comes along when it's possible.) Our son, Aaron, now a senior at Cypress Lake High School, was THE best decision I've made in my life (and I can say that regardless the fact that he's now a teenager). He and I collaborate on teen travel articles and at WGCU, where he's an intern. If it weren't for my family, I would work con- stantly, because that's how much T 'ove it and what's there .riot to love? / How will you spend the holidays? Good question! I always leave our holiday traveling plans to Rob. I do the rest of the year, right? (As a family, we traveler! average three days monthly; I travel on my own at least five.days a month.) We often connect with Rob's family either here or in Virginia. I really like to avoid traveling over the holidays, so I'm thinking a nice family holiday on Sanibel after I finish a LOT of looming dead- lines and before Aaron leaves for college next year sounds wonderful But then, a lot'of our travel plans come last- minute The Sarasota, Sanibel Island & Naples Book is Chelle Koster Walton's newest release. Community gathers for Thanksgiving celebration Submitted by MARJ NORDSTROM The Sanibel community gathered last Sunday evening for a special Thanksgiving Service, an enthusiastic gathering that celebrated all that we have to be thankful for. Piano music by Jerry Frantz, music direcfor from Sanibel Community Church, helped set the mood for the more than 375 people who gathered at The Community House. Event emcee and song leader Fred Nordstrom introduced Sanibel mayor Mick Dcnham, who deliv- ered a prayer while Rev. Hayden Crawford from St. Michaels Church read scripture. Pastor Brad Livermon from Sanibel Community Church sang a hymn solo accompanied by guitar while the SCC's LOGOS Kids performed a Thanksgiving pantomime set to music. Andrew McKelvey from St. Isabel's Catholic Church read George Washington's 1789 Proclamation, which was followed by Sanibel City Manager Juclie Zimomra's reading of George Bush's 2007 Proclamation. ' The BIG' Arts Community Chorus, under the direction of Steve Cramer and with the addition of members of the SCC Choir, sang a rousing Thanksgiving med- ley of songs, with Ruth Keel at the piano and Judy Smith on clarinet. Dr. Ran Niehoff from Sanibel Congregational Church reminded every- body that on the first Thanksgiving in New England back in 1621, the gathering was very Ecumenical, with 90 friendly Indians joining (he 46 Pilgrims who had survived the winter. His clever remarks, many of which were historical,- were entertaining and inspiring. Rabbi Murray Saltzman wrote a poem entitled "Thank God For This Thanksgiving Day," which was read by Jack Cohen from Bat-Yam Temple of the Island and appreciated by all. Janet Werner, representing Lee County Mercy Ministry, introduced the "Pilgrims" from Sanibel Congregational Church, who served as ushers for the generous offering that was delivered to the Fort Myers Rescue Mission, which will help pay for Thanksgiving dinners for the less fortu- nate. After the Benediction was given by SCC Pastor Daryl Donovan, the gathered community sang "God Bless America," :• Apple cider was donated by Bailey's and healthy cookies were offered from Curves during the fellowship following the Thanksgiving presentation. "I think I like to look at all of the arts and crafts more than any- thing," said Southerton, who moved here in 1974. Amon thought a bit longer before commenting, "I like the homemade baked goods... because I don't bake anymore!" Both ladies enjoyed a good laugh. '.-.'• The Island Seniors Holiday Bazaar, stagedJast Saturday at the Sanibel Senior Center, again drew hordes of bargain-hunt- ing shoppers from near and far. Event coordinator Yojande Welch, stationed next to the Trash & Treasures Room, report- ed success from the start of the sales day. "Before the doors were opened, we had people piled up outside... and they still got in!" she noted with a smile. "We've had a steady stream of customers all morning long. It's really great to see the community giving us so much support." In addition to the Trash & Treasures Room, shoppers meandered throughout the building, which was divided into seven different sections: Arts & Crafts, Baked Goods, Books, Outdoor Plants & Gifts, Refreshments and a lounge area. The largest area - ^ Arts & Crafts — featured 19 vendors, who offered merchandise ranging from hand-crafted jewelry and knitted goods to wood and stone sculptures, glassware, Christmas ornaments, holiday-themed gifts and homemade pickles. "I really enjoy meeting all of the people," said vendor Sonja Langdon, a Sanibel resident for more than 10 years who was participating in the bazaar for the fourth time. "You can make a lot of new friends. I've seen some people who are my neighbors and some I've seen from around the island. Everybody comes here." ' . . "I've seen a lot of tourists," added fellow vendor Mandy Boran, who was selling handmade crafts and Party Lite Candles. "It's interesting to talk with them to see where they're from." • . . - Beyond the rear door of the building, customers could peruse the assortment of potted plants offered for sale or relax with a grilled hot dog, a cookie or a soft drink. But inside, most of the people attending the event spent the morning shopping for unique holiday gift items or simply socializing with old friends. "This [bazaar] has been going on for at least 20 years," Amon added. 'They used to have it at the Community Center and men the school, but it got too big. In the U-15 division, the Crew won another close game 6-4 against the rival Rapids. The U-12 championship game pitted the Red Bulls against the Galaxy, winners of the regular season. This was the fourth meeting between the two teams and once again it was a close fought game. Michael Stufano scored twice in the early minutes for the Red Bulls. The Galaxy then controlled much of the action for the remainder of the game but were unable to score until Kirk Williams scored on a direct kick with one minute remaining. Joey and Christina Aulino led the strong Red Bulls defense, along with goalie Thomas Coyne. In the most exciting game of the day, DC United and FC Dallas met for the fourth time in the U-10 division. The two teams had tied for the regular season lead and knew each other well. At the end of regulation play, the score was tied 1-1. The teams then played a 10-minute overtime period but still remained tied. A tense, penalty kick shootput then took place, with DC United prevailing by a slim'owe goal mar- gin. Both teams walked off with their heads held high knowing they had played their hardest and that the game could not have been any closer. "It was another great season," said league president Kirk Williams. "Over 200 boy"s and girls played this year and — thanks to our dedicated coaches — the. level of play improved each week."
