Welcome/Icebreaker – Mario Leon, Eagles Council President o Introduction of officers, representatives, and administration 2. Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) o Eagles Council Constitution and Bylaws (Handout)  Mario highlighted the purpose of the Eagles Council and responsibilities of the members. Most importantly, to stay in regular communication with your teammates in regards to our monthly meetings and areas in need of their feedback. Ken relayed that he received poor grades in this area during the annual SA surveys and using the monthly emailing of minutes/agendas should be good time to piggyback or to send texts before/after meetings. o A-Sun Constitution and Bylaws (Handout) 3. Compliance Update – Alex Masse (Director of Compliance) o Important to keep up with ARMS (signing off on practice logs) o NCAA is stepping up SA involvement for legislation voting – student-athlete voices are being heard o Currently in the process of hiring a new Compliance Coordinator to replace Andrea Miller (departed for Ohio State)– Candidates will be on campus this week 4. Marketing initiatives - Denise Da Silveira (Assistant AD for Marketing & Sales) & Kevin Thurman (Marketing Assistant) o Dirty Birds  Please encourage teammates to join. Helps build more of a fan support for EACH of your teams through personal connections  Marketing has a goal of at least 25% of our SA population to join the Dirty Birds o Eagle Revolution  Wednesday, August 19th 6:30 PM – Alico Arena  Everyone should have received their Eagle Revolution t-shirt from your coaches, if not you should receive it soon. T-shirts are to be worn the first day of classes. Stand up during class and invite your classmates to the event.  Marketing will be emailing coaches dress codes for the event 5. Team Updates 6. A-Sun SAAC Meeting - Kathy Peterson o Great opportunity to meet other SAAC members throughout the A-Sun. Will be taking two Eagles Council representatives to each meeting. If you are interested, please reach out. Will be sending an email with detailed information.  Fall: September 25th–26th @ Kennesaw State (Kennesaw, GA)  Winter: January 22nd–23rd @ Stetson (DeLand, FL) 7. Communication Efforts o After discussion on using Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and/or Snapchat, the council decided to use Group Me to communicate important information/dates throughout the year to one another 8. Academic Updates – Kelly Jean Brock o Excess Hours  State of Florida is “forcing” graduation. Students will now be charged a 50% surcharge if you exceed your major requirements by 110% o Plagiarism/Academic Integrity  This continues to be a major problem at universities around the nation. DO NOT participate in any form of academic dishonesty (plagiarism, cheating, etc.) or you will be subject to harsh consequences. If you are aware of any academic dishonesty taking place please inform administration immediately. o Student-Athlete Book Night  If you have not yet picked up your books, please get to the bookstore as soon as possible  We understand that books are expensive so if you have the opportunity to share a textbook with someone or can get textbooks at a discounted price we would encourage that you do so o GPA/Awards/Highlights  Women’s Basketball ranked 9th highest team academically in the country  Women’s Golf ranked 2nd in the country academically o Team Assignments  Kelly – Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Men’s Golf, Women’s Golf, Women’s Soccer, Men’s Tennis, and Women’s Tennis  Brian – Baseball, Softball, Men’s Cross Country, Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Swimming & Diving, Men’s Soccer, Beach Volleyball, Volleyball  Once the new Athletic Academic Coordinator is hired, those teams that had Megan as their advisor will transition to the new coordinator 9. Marketing – Kevin Thurman o Marketing would like to thank the student-athletes for the support they’ve shown at all of the athletic events so far this semester. There has been more student-athlete support than ever before o Student-Athlete cell phone database: would like to create a student-athlete cell phone data base to open the lines of communication between marketing and student- athletes. You will be able to see what other events are going on, how your events are being marketed, and provide marketing with any feedback/suggestions/ideas that you may have regarding promotions, marketing, etc.  If interested, please have a team member send Kevin a team list of all names and cell phone numbers 4. Team Updates 5. Events Recap o Student-Athlete Welcome Back Picnic: Student-athletes provided positive feedback on the event – everyone enjoyed the food and the games. They felt that it was more interactive than last year o Team community service update:  MBB: Eagle Reading, Community Awareness Event at Laurel Oaks Elementary  SB: Habitat for Humanity o Performance Enhancement Series – Nutrition Workshop:  Student-athletes felt that it was extremely informative and would like to continue the series 6. Athletic Events o Pink Out:  Women’s Soccer vs. Kennesaw State - Sunday, October 11th @ 1:00 PM  Men’s Soccer vs. Lipscomb – Saturday, October 17th @ 7:00 PM  Volleyball vs. Stetson – Saturday, October 24th @ 7:00 PM o Blue/Green:  Women’s Soccer vs. USC Upstate - Friday, October 9th @ 7:00 PM  Student-Athlete Tailgate? – possibly scheduling tailgate for 5:00 PM before the Volleyball match  Men’s Soccer vs. Lipscomb – Saturday, October 17th @ 7:00 PM 7. A-Sun SAAC meeting – Mario Leon o Atlantic Sun is thinking about changing their logo (removing the sun, changing the font, etc.). If you have any suggestions on the logo design, contact Mario o There is going to be a conference wide community service initiative. A-Sun will be sending blankets to donate to homeless shelters  FGCU: it was suggested to donate half of the blankets to a homeless shelter and half the blankets to the Gulf Coast Humane Society o New gifts for qualifying for an A-Sun Conference Championship. A link will be sent out via email. Each student-athlete will be able to select their own gift (i.e. ear buds, speaker, back pack, apparel, travel bag, etc.). Mike Miller will be our university’s contact person. o Can food drive in November – will be competing with other schools in the conference 8. myPlaybook – Kathy Peterson o myPlaybook is an interactive web-based program specific to student-athletes o All freshmen will be required to complete the Core Corse (drugs & alcohol) and the Sexual Assault Course o Sophomores will be required to complete the Sexual Assault Course o All freshmen and sophomores will be receiving an email from Samantha Kelly – please do not delete – with instructions on how to complete the course 9. Office of Equity and Compliance Survey – Kathy Peterson o Survey is to be release Monday, October 5th. Should be receiving a survey link via EagleMail o They are looking to get as much feedback as possible about sexual assault awareness o Incentivizing students – those that complete the survey will receive a coupon for 15% off at the University Bookstore and entered in a raffle drawing to win an IPad Mini 10. Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October) – Kathy Peterson o Thursday, October 1—Kickoff on Library Lawn 11:00 AM-1:00 PM o Thursday, October 8—Recognizing and Responding to Dating and Domestic Violence 1:00 PM Cohen Center 213 o Thursday, October 15—Stalking Presentation (social media/cyber stalking) 1:00 PM Cohen Center 162 o Thursday, October 22—Speaker 7:00 PM Cohen Center o Eagle Pride Challenge points for those that attend any of the events 11. SA360 Program feedback – Kathy Peterson/Lindsey Burr o SA360 is a program/app. designed to deliver information to student-athletes on their preferred medium (smart phone) o Covers topics such as Title IX, sexual assault, mental health, compliance violations, nutrition & wellness, etc. o The department is able to target specific groups of student-athletes, (I.e. female student-athletes, all sophomores, all soccer players, etc.) o Will provide more information at the next meeting 12. Academic Updates – Kelly Jean Brock o Attendance Verification: First time that we have had to complete the attendance verification. Some student-athletes had difficulty verifying their attendance. Please see Kelly if you have any feedback. o Walk In Lab:  Math: Monday - Thursday from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM (OSC Computer Lab)  Writing Center: Monday’s from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM (Lindsey Burr’s Office) o New Academic Coordinator:  We hired a new Athletic Academic Coordinator. Her name is Storm Blitz. She will be working with women’s swimming & diving, women’s soccer, men’s golf, and men’s and women’s tennis. o Priority Registration: Wednesday, October 28th at 6:00 AM  Make sure to check all holds  Schedule meeting with on campus Academic Advisor ASAP 13. Evolutions Lab SA360 o Eagles Council participated in a webinar to discuss use of SA360 for SAs o Overall consensus was EC thought it would be beneficial, especially for more personal topics (i.e. mental health) and to be able to ask questions 3. Spirit Tailgate o Wednesday, November 4th 5:00– 8:00PM at “The ROC” – Student Government is inviting all athletes to attend 4. Meeting Minutes o Approved September gathering minutes 5. Events Recap o Team community service update  MBB/WBB – finished up Eagle Reading at local elementary schools  MCC, WCC, SB, MTN – participated in FGCU Winter Games  MTN, MSO – volunteered for FGCU Athletics Community Awareness at Fort Myers Preparatory & Fitness Academy o Resume Writing Workshop (with Carsyn Crane) feedback:  The template that was provided was very useful  Easy to communicate with Carsyn via email, if needed  Mario highly recommended taking the Interviewing class with Kathy Norris if they have room in their schedule for an elective o Mental Health – Ross Szabo presentation at Cohen Center  SAs really enjoyed his presentation. Felt that it was very interactive and he gave good advice  Liked the fact that he stayed after to answer any questions  Would have liked him to explain ways to improve your mental health  SAs felt that coaches/admins should have attended the session o International Student-Athlete Night  The student-athlete panel provided great advice  Attendees felt that it was nice to be able to interact with other international student-athletes o Wings Up Women Networking Night  Those who went had positive feedback and believed it has good potential to grow into nice opportunity for our SAs to both gain professional insights and to meet role model women in area 7. NCAA SAAC Meeting - Mario Leon (represented A-Sun at the national meeting) o Major change in legislation is that student-athletes now have a say in the voting on new legislation o Some of the legislation that was discussed included:  Time demands: Looking at having 1 off day a week that cannot include travel, or 2 off days a week, one which cannot include travel  3 week mandatory dead period once your season has ended  CARA logs – more SA involvement in their approval of Countable Athletic Related Activities  Creating “sports specific legislation” – right now legislation is too broad. Some teams benefit more than others  Reducing mid-week non-conference games, mostly in baseball and softball  Educating high school student-athletes on the recruiting process and the demands of being a DI student-athlete o Mario will be forwarding an important NCAA survey. You will be able to skip questions that do not involve your sport 8. myPlaybook – Kathy Peterson o MANDATORY for all Freshmen and Sophomores to complete myPlaybook  FR – required to complete the Core Course by Friday, October 30th  Reminder email was sent out from Samantha Kelly. KP will follow up with another reminder email. Please do not delete these emails  FR/SO – required to complete the Sexual Assault Awareness course by Tuesday, December 1st - reminder emails will be sent o Please remind all your FR/SO’s to complete the required course 9. Prevention & Wellness Program – Step UP! – Kathy Peterson o Step UP! - a comprehensive bystander intervention training program  Program would take about an hour/hour and a half to complete. Would schedule training prior to an EC meeting and have a short break in- between for pizza and drinks before the EC meeting  EC representatives agreed that they would this training 10. Academic Updates o Priority Registration: Wednesday, October 28th at 6:01 AM  You must turn in your priority registration form to your Athletic Academic Coordinator in order for your student-athlete hold to be lifted  Check all holds via GULFLINE o Drop Date: Tuesday, November 3rd  Talk to your Athletic Academic Coordinator if you are struggling in a course and are planning on dropping it. There are a few who did not complete it by the deadline and will have community service hours to complete. b. The sexual assault awareness course is due by all freshmen and sophomores by December 1. 7. Night at the Nest VI — Kathy Peterson a. Friday, December 4th – Alico Arena b. KP sent an email to all head coaches with their team’s assignment so hopefully they’ve shared with their student-athletes. c. KP will send reminder email to all student-athletes of their assignments for the night 8. Spring Welcome Back Party o Head Pinz – Sunday, January 10th o $10 charge for each SA (Athletics will pay the other half) o Potential Movie on the SB Field o Will look to do this later in the spring semester 9. FGCU Food Drive: FEED FGCU a. Our Athletics Charity of Choice to benefit the FGCU Food Pantry. During all of the home games in November we will be collecting can goods. 10. A-Sun Blankets a. Each institution in the A-Sun will receive 250 blankets to donate to a charity cause of their choice 11. Academic Updates – Kelly Brock o Finals are imminent! Eagles Council Service Learning Opportunity – Habitat for Humanity i. Please get with teammates/coaches or myself to discuss your teams community service project 13. Habitudes – Brian Boveington a. Meeting with teams and reviewing the images from the book b. MTN and WBB are the only teams who have not started the program 14. End of Year Surveys o (MSOC, WSOC, MXC, WXC, VB) o Please turn them into KP, Molly, or Ken before the end of the semester 15. Director of Athletics - Ken Kavanagh o Please let us know if we need any follow ups since our team meetings: facilities/equipment/laundry/team travel/other support areas o OSC Parking o $10 parking tickets may be issued if OSC parking rules are violated (SAs should not be parking to left of sign unless injured or weekends – areas designed for staff and guests/recruits) o Teamwork on common areas appearances o Please work to keep these areas clean as Department Teammates o Please help with “Knuckleheads” and their fulfilling deadlines to avoid “accountability” community service needing to be implemented. o CONGRATS to great Fall Seasons (SOC A-Sun 6-peats and national rankings, WXC 13th in Region, Swim/Dive #23, WBB #22, MTN – Vitale Doubles title, VB second place) 16. Future Eagles Council Meeting Dates – Mark your calendars now! All meetings will take place in the Alico Arena Hospitality Suite a. Sunday, December 6th - 7PM b. Monday, January 11th – 7PM c. Sunday, February 28th – 7PM d. Wednesday – March 30th – 7PM e. Wednesday – April 20th – 7PM fitness center to ourselves – hopefully in about 18 months. Given this info we will not build the temporary modest athletics fitness area and will save the resources (approx. $500K) to directly build the new athletics academic center in this space – connected to Alico sports medicine expansion on ground floor near flag poles (new basketball offices above). b. Encouraged everyone to use the Career Services office on campus, as well as take advantage of the emails he sends regarding the Sports Career Institute. That site gives pertinent career prep information whether or not you want a job in athletics (resumes, cover letters, pre and post interviews, networking) c. Night at the Nest – o First ever sell out – initial use of mobile bidding that went really well. o Raised new record net $525K+ (maybe more) vs $465K last year and only $32K in first event in 2010. o Terrific friendraiser as well and our SAs were tremendous in this key role! d. Fall Team SA Surveys/Senior Exit Interviews o Please make sure to complete as soon as possible and turn them into KP, Ken, or Molly (not coaches) o Are considering making surveys shorter and putting them on Canvas as an online form – just want to make sure submissions stay high overall e. New scanning of SA ids to get access in Alico Arena and the OSC when closed o Softball is the only team who has had theirs programmed o Can go get them scanned in yourself at Comp Services -Mike Miller has given them a list of SAs o Please let Ken know next month if your team hasn’t been covered yet f. IAC Sub Committees: Diversity & Inclusion(Elizabeth Means)/ Health & Wellness (Jake Sherwin/Tabby Tindell)/ Gender Equity (Stephanie Haas) gatherings o Diversity & Inclusion Committee met on Monday, Nov. 30th Elizabeth: we are currently in similar diverse proportion to rest of students and faculty/staff. o ADIC & GEC meet this coming week g. Holiday Greeting to Eagles Club o A SA from each team will be represented in a Holiday greeting video to be sent to donors and Eagles Club members over upcoming break h. Eagles Club Thank a Thon: o Ken asked for feedback what EC members thought as to keep on Super Bowl Sunday or another date. Mixed feelings. Gender Equity Committee (GEC) – Steph Haas i. Steph reported that at the most recent Gender Equity Committee meeting that overall roster numbers were reviewed and everything looked good in regards to “proportionality” (comparison of student- athletes gender breakdown relative to FGCU undergrads compositions). GEC also reviewed the list of new staff hires in the athletics department. b. Health & Wellness Committee (AHWC) –Jake Sherwin i. Jake reported that at the most recent AHWC meeting, it was discussed about modifying the current drug testing policy to make the first “street drugs” positive without a suspension (positive performance enhancers would remain unchanged). Also, that it might be best to put critical information that student-athletes should see on CANVAS since everyone has to access CANVAS for classes. c. Inclusion & Diversity Committee (AIDC) – Elizabeth Means i. Elizabeth reported that at the most recent AIDC meeting, it was discussed that it would be a good idea to have student-athletes do a Public Service Announcement about civility/respect to be shown at games and on-line. 15. WingsUp Leadership Academy a. NCAA Leadership Conference – Brian Boveington/Marc-Eddy Norelia both attended recent event in Phoenix. Marc-Eddy represented entire A-Sun. i. Affirmation cards – used to establish continued trust on your team ii. Given workbooks with different leadership assignments iii. “Find Your Why” Card: Helps individuals define their own personal vision b. 2016-17 Programming i. Newcomers - 1.
