Step Response of an RLC Circuit ECE 2100 Circuit Analysis Laboratory updated 8 January 2008 Pre-Laboratory Assignment Consider the circuit of Figure 1. The voltage source Vs and resistance Rs comprise a circuit model of a function generator. As in the RC step response lab, this voltage source will be used to apply a voltage step to the RLC circuit. 1. Find α, ω0, ωd, and vC(t) for R1=750Ω, 2450Ω, and 3550Ω. Use a table to present your results. 2. Use your SPICE engine to verify the waveform shapes predicted by pre-laboratory step 1 (that is, simulate this circuit for R1=750Ω, 2450Ω, and 3550Ω). Plot vC(t), vL(t), and vR(t). An example plot is shown in Figure 2. 3. Find the 10%-90% rise time of vC(t) for the three resistor values. Figure 1. RLC Circuit with Square Wave Voltage Source 1
