Burke 1 Lauren Burke October 3, 2007 EDTC 100-C Mr. Hebert A Teacher’s Purpose Throughout the years I have been in school, I have observed some uplifting and creative teaching styles, but I have also observed depressing and emotionless teaching styles. Some teachers simply read the book to their students, and some have no passion for it at all. I believe that there is more to teaching than merely stating the facts and their backgrounds. Emotion behind the words spoken by the teacher is a necessity, and everyone can benefit from it. I plan to bring emotion and passion that I have obtained through my own experiences to the school system, and the outcomes will be superior to my own classroom experiences presently and during grade school. I consider myself an eclectic individual with an interesting background and unique talents. I was born in Sulphur, Louisiana, to an power plant technician and an elementary school teacher, their first of three children. While growing up I was a studious child who was curious about the world, and I loved learning new things. School was one of my favorite places to be, and math was my favorite subject. However, during these years I found some of my teachers to be emotionless and that discouraged me a bit. I only wanted to learn more. On another aspect, during grade school I had other interests as well. At the age of eight, I began taking piano lessons and was completely intrigued by the instrument. Having an abundance of integrity and dedication, I continued taking lessons for ten years. I still play in my spare time, and it is the ultimate outlet of self Burke 2 expression. Playing the piano is not my only musical talent. I also spent seven years in choir while learning basic vocal techniques. While using that same intense integrity and dedication, I was able to improve my voice and broaden my range. I consider my musical talents to be very valuable skills, and they contribute to my image as a well- rounded individual. Although I have been exposed to higher levels of music, I have not had the opportunity to travel very far. One particular event, however, was my recent trip to New York. The culture shock was intense, and it made me realize how sheltered I am. I plan to travel more in the future to gain experience from other similar encounters. Although traveling is definitely not a dominant hobby in my life, I have other ways of passing time. One of my favorite hobbies is making jewelry, and I have been creating them since I was ten years old. It is a very tedious task, but it is also very rewarding because the finished product is absolutely amazing. Bracelet making definitely provides me with a sense of self worth, and I think that other people should experience this as well. When considering my hobbies, history, unique talents, and the simple fact that I enjoy learning new things, I would enjoy teaching others and learning along with them. Taking into account my curious nature and a constantly changing world, I consider myself to be an advocate of life-long learning. I intend to keep up with shifting areas of math, my region of expertise, and keep my students in touch with the current mathematical applications and formulas. I aim to bring the best knowledge available to my future students while learning new ideas and other teaching methods. Being a current student myself and having this desire for knowledge, I hope to satisfy others’ yearning for knowledge.
