Study Guide Test 1: October 3/4 Identification Terms: Of these eight terms/phrases, four will be on the test and you will choose two to answer. The answer should include who/what, when, where, and why this was significant. (Hint: Know six of the terms to assure that worst case scenario; at least two will be on the exam) Mercantilism Boston Massacre Columbian Exchange Colonization of Ireland Bacon’s Rebellion Radical Whig Ideology Great Awakening The Albany Congress Example of how to answer the Identification Terms: French and Indian War French and Indian War: The French and Indian War was the North American theatre of the Seven Years war that pitted the French and Indians against the British. The war lasted from 1754-1763 and initially saw French success on the battlefield until the ascension of William Pitt to the head of the British ministry. Pitt rapidly increased the mobilization of the British Army and Navy in the Americas which turned the tide of war and resulted in the French suing for peace at the Peace of Paris in 1763. The French and Indian War was significant because it turned over all French land to the British in North America and opened up lands west of the Appalachians for frontier settlements. Additionally, it encouraged the British to tighten their control over the colonists via taxation to defray the cost of the conflict, and left thousands of British regulars (red coats) in the colonies, which would heighten tensions against the mother country and create an environment that would lead to the Revolutionary War. Essay Questions: Of these four questions, two will be on the test and you will choose one to answer. Make sure your essay contains an introductory paragraph (which contains a thesis statement), three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. (Hint: Know three of these essays to assure that worst case scenario so you will be able to answer one on the exam) 1) Why were the Europeans able to conquer the natives in America so easily? 2) Why did the English decide to colonize the New World? 3) What caused the Salem Witch Trials? 4) What were the origins of the American Revolution?
