Briefly summarize the main ideas of Goffman’s “dramaturgical” perspective, and (a) discuss how the following components are related to the process of “impression management”. (1) physical appearance and props (e.g., dress, style, manner) (2) front vs back regions (b) Provide a reasonably detailed example of the dramaturgical perspective in practice (e.g., church, bar, dance club, gym, restaurant, etc.) showing how the concepts identified in part (a) work in an everyday situation. 3. Three important manipulative strategies in interaction involve getting another person to like you (so s/he will be more receptive to your influence attempts), reducing the negative effects of inappropriate behavior and forcing an identify on the other person that will benefit you or your objectives. (a) W hat is“Ingratiation,” and what are its main function(s) as a tactic in strategic interaction (1) W hat are the 3 main approaches to ingratiating oneself to another person and what are their main strengths and weaknesses as a tactic? Provide examples. (b) W hat are the main forms of “aligning actions,” and under what conditions are each most likely to be used? Provide examples. (c) W hat is “altercasting,” how does it work as a tactic in influencing another person, and what, if any, disadvan- tages of using it? Provide and example. 4. It is obviously useful to the “target” of tactical impression management to know when they are being deceived and/or manipulated. Provide examples for your discussion of the following areas. (a) W hy is the detection of “ulterior motives” important to the target person? (b) W hat main types of verbal and nonverbal cues are used to detect deception, which are more and less effective, and why? (c) W hat does the research show regarding how accurate people are in detecting deception? Are some types of people more effective than others, and if so, why? 5. W hat are the main causes and responses to “embarrassment,” and how do the latter (responses of the embar- rassed person and the observers) help to “save face” and restore normal interaction? 6. Occasionally a person can’t meet the standards of the identity s/he has claimed, others may take actions to help or force them to redefine the person’s identity. “cooling-out” and “identity degradation” are 2 such actions. How are these tactics different, and under what conditions is each more likely to be used? 7. Sometimes the reactions of others to a person’s physical characteristics or personal history may make smooth interaction more difficult. (a) W hat is “stigma” generally, and what are some typical examples one might see in everyday life? (b) Provide a reasonably detailed example of how a person’s “stigma” may affect their interaction with so-called “normals.” (c) W hat are some of the main coping strategies stigmatized persons and “normals” use to reduce discomfort in their interactions with one another?
