Jason Larson Com 218 Sec 01 A-3 Adoption Process This assignment that we have been given is to revisit our experience of the adoption process with an innovation in communication technology. After several minutes of thinking I recalled a recent piece of hardware that I purchased that would be a perfect example for this particular assignment. About two months ago I picked up the newest device out from Nintendo named the Nintendo DS. The DS is Nintendo’s newest entry into the handheld market to be marketed alongside but not replace their already very popular Game Boy. Where the DS differs from the game boy is what sets it apart drastically. First of all, the DS has two gaming screens instead of one, with the bottom screen being touch-sensitive. This allows for a number of gaming options with the creativity being left up to the developers. In addition, the sheer power of the system allows the graphics to be equal to that of the Nintendo 64, far surpassing the game boy. Furthermore, each DS can communicate with one another wirelessly for game play or to use the embedded picto-chat program in the hardware. This program is a communication tool that allows a person to draw and write on the touch sensitive screen and then sends it to another system wirelessly. It’s quite cool. One other genius feature that Nintendo included in the console was that it is backward compatible with all game boy games, which is it can play all pre-existing game boy games as well as DS games. Moreover, from what I have read the company plans on taking the system online within the next six months. I’m not sure for what, but knowing Nintendo it will be fascinating. I clearly went through the adoption process in innovation technology when I learned of the Nintendo DS and then picked it up. The first step, being knowledge, occurred as I checked gaming websites periodically and one day learned of the system to be announced. At first not many specifications were released for the system, as Nintendo is always tight-lipped about their products. As time went on though up until its launch I learned more about the system and its innovative features. Next, persuasion occurred as I educated myself of the new features of the system and read Nintendo’s press releases hyping the system. It also occurred from Nintendo’s marketing through broadcast and text media. After countless weeks of debating whether I wanted to spend the money on the DS I decided that it was worth my while to pick up the system. I based my decision on Nintendo’s past track record of bringing remarkable games to every system that they introduce. This is the phase where I adopted the product instead of rejecting it. Since my purchase I have had successful confirmation that I made the right decision in buying the system. I currently own three games for the system and they are all innovative and fun. The best games will be coming out this year but for the time being I do in fact enjoy the system and am glad to have purchased it. I feel that I made the right decision in adopting this product, and according to the sales numbers so does Japan and the U.S. Well then, my final paragraph is going to be quite boring because I felt that the adoption process model did an excellent job of describing the stages that I went through with this particular product. I experienced each and every stage of the model exactly as described with the final outcome being my acceptance of the new product. If I were to
