UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT FACULTY OF SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY AN UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROPOSAL ON HIGH SEROPREVALENCE OF SYPHILIS AMONG PREGNANT WOMEN IN XYZ BY JOHN PROMISE UTOMOBONG U2018/5555109 SUPERVIISOR: DR TOCHI COOKEY MAY 2023 Current literature comparing the prevalence rates of curable Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in pregnant women in various global regions is limited. As a result, antenatal screening practices for curable STIs in pregnant women especially, syphilis, vary around the world. Despite the availability of cost effective screening and treatment options, the burden of syphilis in pregnant women remains high due to limited access to healthcare, low awareness, stigma, inadequate antenatal care. Addressing the high seroprevalance of syphilis in pregnant women is crucial to improve mother and child health outcomes in Nigeria. BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY To determine the rate of seroprevalance of syphilis among pregnant women in Rivers state. To assess the availability of screening facilities for syphilis among pregnant women in Rivers state. Investigating factors contributing to the persistently high seroprevalance of syphilis. To identify the socio-demographic and behavioral factors associated with syphilis infection among pregnant women. To recommend effective interventions and strategies for prevention and control of syphilis among pregnant women. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) test kit Handgloves Disposable paper towels Bleach Detergent Liquid soap Bottled water EDTA bottles Plain tubes Syringe MATERIALS STUDY AREA: METHODOLOGY SAMPLE COLLECTION, TRANSPORTATION, PREPARATION, AND STORAGE Consent will be sought and blood samples will be collected from the pregnant women The blood samples will be stored in EDTA bottles to prevent clotting and transported to the laboratory. If when the blood samples arrive the lab and it is not used immediately, they will be stored in the refrigerator at 4-8oC The blood sample will be centrifuged at 1000 x gravitational units(g) to separate the serum. The serum will be used to check for antibodies present. SEROLOGICAL ANALYSIS Descriptive statistics- Mean, median, and standard deviation of relevant variables Chi-square- To examine the association between syphilis infections and various factors such as age, education, or economic status. It helps determine if there is a significant relationship between these variables. Logistic regression- This technique is used to analyze the association between a binary (presence or absence of syphilis) and a set of predictor variables (e.g age marital status, antenatal care). It allows us to estimate the odds ratio and assess the significance of the predictors. DATA ANALYSIS
