Centro Escolar Integrated School Senior High School Makati THE BEHAVIORS OF GRADE 11 ABM STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM SETTING, 2019-2020 OF CEIS-MAKATI Members: CABRAL, JASMIN CLAIRE R. DOMINGUEZ, JAN VINCENT M. Albino, Lyra Mae S. Borcelis, Jhon Ray B. Cabral, Jasmin Claire R. Gutierrez, Kyla S. Laroya, Raphael B. Marcayda, Zhien Angel M. Oliva, Annie Zabrine A. Talusan, Philip Andrew M. Umengan, Jan Micah M CHAPTER 1 Background of the study The school plays an important role in the overall development of a student. Every academic year, students go to school at least for 200 days to not only to develop cognitively, socially, emotionally but as well as the behavior of the students. A school’s main goal is to develop a person’s mind and character. The Senior High School level is known to be one of the most crucial years of a high school student. In this stage, behavior of students is affected because of its existing environment. Behavior is very important aspect in the well-being of a student and the school’s goal is to improve it. Students display different kinds of behavior according on its environment he/she has gotten used to. Behavior also changes in a school setting base on a student’s goal in its studies and grades. It is also an important part of forming relationships with other people such as your friends and classmates which can also influence your behavior on a classroom setting. The researchers decided to take on this topic because they want to know and find out what behaviors do students of Grade 11 ABM students of CEIS Makati S.Y. 2019-2020 show and portray in a classroom setting. This theory is relatively simple to understand because it relies only on observable behavior and describes several universal laws of behavior. Its positive and negative reinforcement techniques can be very effective– such as in treatments for human disorders including autism, anxiety disorders and antisocial behavior. Behaviorism is often used by teachers who reward or punish student behaviors. (McLeod, S 2017) Basic Principle of Classical Conditioning According to Ivan Pavlov, proprietor of the theory, Classical conditioning is a form of learning whereby a conditioned stimulus (CS) becomes associated with an unrelated unconditioned stimulus (US) in order to produce a behavioral response known as a conditioned response (CR). The conditioned response is the learned response to the previously neutral stimulus. The unconditioned stimulus is usually a biologically significant stimulus such as food or pain that elicits an unconditioned response (UR) from the start. The conditioned stimulus is usually neutral and produces no particular response at first, but after conditioning it elicits the conditioned response. Skinner- Operant Conditioning Operant conditioning is a method of learning that occurs through rewards and punishments for behaviour. Through operant conditioning, an individual makes an association between a particular behaviour and a consequence (Skinner, 1938). Definition of Terms Cognitive Variables. Entity. a thing with distinct and independent existence. these disturbing behaviors in the classroom are intolerable and stress-provoking, and they had to spend a great deal of time and energy to manage the classroom. According to the studies found, nineteen (19) categories of classroom misbehaviors were identified, with talking out of turn, disrespecting teacher, and doing something in privatebeing most frequently mentioned. Findings revealed that students tended to perceive misbehaviors as those actions inappropriate in the classroom settings and even disrupting teachers’ teaching and other students’ learning. Among various misbehaviors, talking out of turn and disrespecting teacher were seen as the most disruptive and unacceptable. While classroom misbehavior is generally interpreted as disruptive and improper behavior that adversely affects the order, teaching, and learning in classroom, it is noteworthy that the range of student misbehavior varies across cultures. (Rachel C. F. Sunand Daniel T. L. Shek, Volume 2012) Within positive psychology, education is seen as an important area of application. Seligman et al. (2009) defined positive education as “education for both traditional skills and for happiness” (p. 263). Inherent in positive education is the idea that good character, positive behaviors at school and academic achievement are not only aims of education, but also closely intertwined. However, little is known empirically about this interplay. The importance of good character in education has recently been emphasized both in scientific and popular literature (e.g., Tough, 2012; Linkins et al., 2015) and researchers from neighboring disciplines (e.g., Hokanson and Karlson, 2013) have also called for studying the role of character strengths in education. Negative Effect of Student’s Misbehavior According to Essay’s UK, student’s misbehavior is an issue which both parents and educators identify as having the most problematic and negative effect on society. In addition, it is argued that a certain emotional instability or vulnerability inherent in a child may cause him or her to misbehave. Therefore, the blame for students’ misbehavior is on the students themselves. Moreover, misbehavior also harms teachers and their students because it interrupts classroom instruction. It increases the teachers’ stress levels, diverts the teachers’ attention and thus negatively influences the quality of teaching and learning and subsequently interferes with academic achievement and success. When parents enrolled their children in school, they know that they have given the school personnel, specifically the advisers and teachers the authority to discipline their children while inside the school premise. But the teacher must be aware that they don’t have the absolute authority. Disciplinary actions must be done according to what is stated in the school’s student manual in order not to create future problems and legal conflicts with the students and their parents. However, the teachers are encouraged to have a positive behavior towards any situations in the classroom or during class hours. Student conduct problems in the classroom not only interfere with teaching and learning but are also thought to be a leading contributor to teacher stress and a precursor to later school dropout. Many districts and schools are aggressively searching for programs to remediate and reform problematic behavior in students. (Giancola, Susan Poland, "Student misbehavior: An exploratory study of individual, familial, social, and institutional influences” 1998) Each year for the past decade in the Annual Gallup Poll of the Public's Attitudes Toward the Public Schools, safety, drug use, and lack of discipline were most frequently cited as major problems facing public schools (Snyder, Hoffman, & Geddes, 1996). Students display different kinds of behavior according on its environment. The environment is a contributing factor to students’ delinquency such as loitering, playing truant, bullying, skipping, and more. Adolescent stage is a transition stage from childhood to adulthood. Their emotions and minds will easily change according to the environment. The existence of internet cafe and various entertainment centres and others that provide a variety of products that can promote illicit social ills. (Arifin, R. binti M., Wahab, N. B. A., Teh, K. S. bin M., & Otman, M. S. (2018). Influence of Social Environment on Student’s Behaviour. International Journal of Academic Research in Business and Social Sciences) The classroom environment cannot be pinpointed as one specific entity. The whole environment of the classroom consists of several factors; indeed "it (the classroom environment) is constructed in much the same manner as a quilt-numerous and diverse parts gain distinctiveness through the contribution of each piece to a whole" (Stewart, Evans & Kaczynski, 1997, p.56). According to Marzano, behavior and classroom management are the two variables that have the greatest impact on student learning. Teachers should develop classroom rules in order to communicate expectations. Stewart et al. arugue: "Behavior management and classroom control are central to stimulating learning. Research has shown that teachers who are effective in managing classroom behavior are also effective in improving achievement" (p. 55).
