RUBRIC FOR EVALUATION OF CRITERION 3G Ability to Communicate Effectively in Oral Presentations STS 401 and 402 Our Articulation of the Objective: Students will demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in oral presentations with both expert and non-expert audiences. A SCORE OF 5: Presentations in this category demonstrate superior competence. The speaker has clearly mastered the material and is committed to communicating the message to the audience. The opening gains the immediate attention and respect of both expert and non-expert members of the audience, develops the project context concisely but fully, clearly delineates the central problem or question the project is addressing, and sets up the remainder of the presentation. The development portion of the presentation leaves no important questions unanswered, flows well, and provides adequate detail without getting bogged down. Key terms are defined, and examples are used effectively. Emphasis is clear, and there are effective organizational signals throughout the presentation. Voice, body control, and eye contact are polished and nearly flawless. Visual aids are thoughtfully designed and handled effectively. A SCORE OF 4: Presentations in this category demonstrate strong competence. The opening makes the subject clear but could do a little more to engage the audience’s attention. The opening also develops the context reasonably well, though the central problem could emerge more clearly. It could be clearer when the presentation moves from the introduction to the development section. Most key aspects of problem, approach, and product are explained clearly. A few minor unclear points may remain. Social and ethical contexts are covered. The conclusion is clearly marked and complete but could do more to reinforce the audience’s sense of discovery and significance. Voice, eye contact, and body control are good, but there is a little room for improvement. Visual aids are helpful, but there are minor flaws either in the way they are used or formatted. A SCORE OF 3: Presentations in this category demonstrate reasonably consistent competence. The speaker seems reasonably in control of the material and the situation, but there may be gaps in logic or content, or some significant aspect of the presentation (opening, development, conclusion, the delivery, the visual aids, or other) may be weak. The visual aids may be too few, too many, not appropriately adapted for the format in which they are presented, or handled poorly on occasion. The speaker seems to know the subject fairly well but hasn’t prepared for this particular presentation as well as he or she might have. A SCORE OF 2: Presentations in this category demonstrate developing competence. The speaker shows some evidence of preparation and organization, but the material does not flow well and lacks clarity in some important respects. There are problems
