A method of formal and professional writing which is simple, concise and clear similar to own natural writing. (02) How you can improve academic writing? Reading textbooks and journal articles in your own field of studies. (03) What are the characteristics of academic writing? Briefly explain.  Use of correct grammar and punctuation; Using passive voice (ex: Researcher found that the virus used to stay on the metal surface much longer.) Not starting any sentences with And or Because. Correct use of full stops, commas, colons, semi colons, hyphens, speech marks and apostrophes. Correct use of tenses. Correct use of singular and plural grammar. Use of correct syntax and sentence structures.  Use of formal writing style; Using full words instead of shortened versions (ex: Should not, would not, did not…).Not using idioms or slang words (ex: white as a paper.., a pinch of salt...).Not using text massage style in writing (ex: Facebook should be written instead of FB).Not using informal words (ex: etc. , very).  Use of correct spelling.  Using linking words and phrases to compare, contrast and explain different ideas. To compare and contrast different situations or ideas using linking words; equally…, likewise…, similarly…, however…, it appears that…, on the contrary… To draw conclusions and to show examples using words as: For example…, this demonstrates…, for instances.., to summarize…, in conclusion…, finally…, in other words…  Avoid subjective and emotive language and should be objective. Should not include expressions of personal feelings. (ex: Thomas provided a massive contribution to the field of physics..). Using 3rd person language instead of 1st person language (ex: It could be concluded that..). When writing personal reflections use of 1st person language.  Use correct referencing One of the main characteristics of academic writing is indicating all the references that you used as an in-text-citation and in the reference list (end-text-citation). In an in-text-citation use your own words to refer to the author. The reference list goes at the end of the assignment and includes all the resources that was referred to write. Things that you read but not directly referred to writing are known as bibliographies are includes in the reference list as well. (06) Briefly explain the steps of paraphrasing. Paraphrasing is discussing another person’s work or ideas using your own words. Step1-Read; Identifying the parts of the source that is relevant. Focus upon key points that author is trying to convey rather than focusing upon what is discussed in single sentence. Step2-Bullet out main ideas and list key points that are identified. Use small sentences as a summery not long sentences. Step3- Reread; Go back to the original source and reread to catch out the missing points. Step4-Paraphrase; summarize the source in a logical sequence using the list of point that you have created. Step5-Check; Compare your summary with the original. It should show that you have written your own words with accuracy and writing should not look the same as the original with only a few words changed. Step6-Referencing; it should be done in the body of your work and in the reference list using “Harvard referencing”. (07) Give a brief introduction to plagiarism. Using someone else’s words or ideas without properly acknowledging them and presenting them your own is known as plagiarism. There are many instances where a person can be accused of plagiarism; after referencing an author but your words are considered very close to the original, copying information from any source without acknowledgement (ex: newspaper, internet articles, books, magazines, research articles… ), using someone else’s words without indicating them in the double quotation marks nor referencing them, copying another student’s work or having getting your work done by another person and presenting them as your own work, copy pasting downloaded material from the internet to make them to an essay and even self-plagiarism (re-submitting your work from a previous work without acknowledging it) could mark your work as plagiarised. To avoid plagiarism proper paraphrasing and referencing should be done. There are many software to detect plagiarism and the one that is most accepted and used is a software called ‘TURNITIN’.
