External - Scrotum & Penis 2. Internal - Gonads & Accessory glands Male Gonads / Testes - Produced sperm in highly coiled tubes called seminiferous tubules. - Its temperature is maintained about 2°C below the body core temperature by the scrotum. The following are the 3 sets of accessory glands that produce secretions that combine with sperm to semen, the fluid that is being ejaculated. 1. Seminal vesicles SECRETIONS - Thick, yellowish, and alkaline. - It contains mucus, the sugar fructose, a coagulating enzyme, ascorbic acid, and local regulators called prostaglandins. PURPOSE - Semen coagulation, sperm motility, suppression of immune activity in female reproductive tract. 2. Prostate glands SECRETIONS - Thin and milky, the fluid from this gland contains anticoagulant enzymes and citrate. PURPOSE - Nourishes sperm, transport sperm (seminal fluid) 3. Bulbourethral glands SECRETIONS - Before the ejaculation, they secrete clear mucus that neutralizes any acidic urine remaining in the urethra. PURPOSE - It neutralizes urine in the urethra. Penis - Contains the urethra as well as three cylinders of spongy erectile tissue. - During the sexual arousal, the erectile tissue was filled with blood. And then it increases the pressure that seals off the veins that drain the penis, causing it to engorge with blood. - Erection enables the penis to be inserted into the vagina. Female Reproductive System Two Parts of Female Rep. System: 1. External - Clitoris - 2 sets of Labia 2. Internal - Gonads - System of ducts and chambers Gonads - Are a pair of ovaries that flank the uterus and are held in place in the abdominal cavity by ligaments. Ovary - Its outer layer is packed with follicles. Oviduct / Fallopian Tube - It extends from the uterus toward a funnel-like opening at each ovary. - The cilia convey the egg down the duct to the uterus, also known as the womb. Uterus / Womb - Thick, muscular organ that can expand during pregnancy to accommodate a 4-kg fetus. Endometrium - Inner lining of the uterus, and is richly supplied with blood vessels. Cervix - It is the neck of the uterus and it opens into the vagina. Vagina - It is muscular but elastic chamber that is the site for insertion of the penis. - It also serves as a cannal when the baby is born. Vulva - Collective form for the external female genitalia.
