Salts are formed together with water upon neutralization of the reaction of equivalent amounts of an acid and a base. Not all salts are neutral. Only salts formed from a strong acid and strong base are neutral. Those that contain the anion of a weak acid will hydrolyze or react with water to form the weak acid and free OH ions.
