Masuyama @ ACTFL2007 Topic: Teaching Japanese literature in Japanese By Kazue Masuyama, Sacramento State University November 16, 2007, ACTFL Abstract: To teach Japanese literature course in Japanese for students with various proficiency levels, instructors must be innovative in developing the course, delivering it, and assessing student learning. In order to make learning meaningful, it is vital to incorporate effective use of visuals, bilingual material, videos, and informal discussions using Discussion Board and Japanese-speaking people. Goals: After attending this presentation, participants will be able to 1. State reasons for teaching literature 2. Locate some reading materials for their Japanese literature classes 3. Identify some instructional approaches in introducing Japanese literature Presentation Outline I. What is reading? What does it mean to teach literature? II. What literature should we introduce to the class? - How do I locate a list of Japanese literature available online? - What Japanese literature is commonly introduced at other college and high school programs? - What Japanese literatures (English translation) do my colleague(s) introduce to students? - Should I ask students to make the choice of the text they read? - What is the criteria by which the instructor/students choose the reading material? III. How did I conduct my Japanese literature class? - Urashima Taro - The Tale of Genji - Botchan - Totto-chan - Individual Project Work IV. Discussion Course Syllabus http://www.csus.edu/indiv/m/masuyama/Courses/JAPN110syllabus.htm Today’s presentation http://www.csus.edu/indiv/m/masuyama/presentation/actfl2007.htm Any questions? kmasuyama@csus.edu Teaching Japanese literature

No good deed goes unpunished." ay ne CGE: al) aod ae [Gh ADA AR <9 ,0) tee ee)
