Also, this identifies the unfamiliar words, problems, and the scope limitation of the study. Here it comprises existing literature, current issues, and present problems and circumstances associated with the study. Introduction This study seeks to contribute to research that seeks to understand experiences of teenage motherhood. This research shows the lived experiences of Filipino teenage mothers by the proposed product- YoungMomHood Infographic on how they prepare and accept their new roles as mothers. According to Philippine National Statistics Office (2020) The Philippines teenage pregnancy rate has increased by 60% in the year 2000- 2010, This is highly disturbing. Teenage pregnancy frequently happens between the ages of 15-19 years, and girls still study often at this age. The af La Consolacion College - Cal 496 A. Mabini St., Caloocan City PAASCU Accredited Level Ill (GS) / LeYg PACUCOA Accredited Level II (BSBA, B: “ Researchers conducted this research topic because we want to know what is like for teenage mothers to have a baby at such a young age. We want to know and understand their journey as a teenage mom. What do they do if they're being judged? If they can handle both of their pregnancy and studies well? And we also want to know if their pregnancy is an accident or not. Wahn and Nissen (2005) studied young women between the ages of 15 to 19 years who were either pregnant or already a parent (already given birth). When they looked at the teens’ attitudes and knowledge about motherhood, they found those who looked at pregnancy as a better lifestyle actually felt that way about it at first, but once the child arrived they found it more difficult than they thought it would be. The majority chose to continue with pregnancy because they either wanted it or were unsure about it. However, some mentioned that they became more responsible and mature as a result of getting pregnant and having a baby but it was difficult to adjust with the new financial problems and taking care of a baby. According to Williams (2005) adolescents encountered more problems during pregnancy and child birth than older women. The long- term effects of pregnancies are far reaching and teenage mothers face difficulties such as dropping out of school. The problems encountered may be physical, psychological, social, academic and emotional. The research team chose this topic because motherhood is a significant and important aspect of life for many women around the world. Nowadays early pregnancy among teenagers is rampant. Significance of the Study The results of this study will be beneficial to the following people and institutions. The study will add new knowledge about to the teenage pregnancy their experiences as well as knowledge concerned family. For the mothers of the students: As both parents and students, they will gain insight into their situation and be aware of their obligations. For the students: They will gain a deeper understanding of the reality of teenager mother and learn about the experiences of early pregnancy mother, most importantly for them. For the guidance counselors: The findings and observations would provide them relevant data that can be used in their counseling interventions. Theoretical Framework It is the structure that can hold or support a theory of a research study. The theoretical framework introduces and describes the theory that explains why the research problem under study exists. In this study, Schlossberg’s Transition Theory is usually classified as a theory of adult development (Goodman et al., 2006). The theory allows researchers to better appreciate what individuals experience during a transition period. The theory defines transition as any event or non- event in which the outcome transforms relationships, practices, expectations, and responsibilities (Goodman, Schlossberg, & Anderson, 2006). These three types of transitions are defined as anticipated transitions (expected events), unanticipated transitions (unexpected events), and non-events (events that are expected to occur but do not occur) (Evans et al., 2010; Goodman et al., 2006). The context of the transition refers to the individual’s relationship to the transition and the settings in which the transition takes place. The impact is determined by how the transition influences the day-to-day life of the individual (Anderson et al., 2012; Evans af 14 La Consolacion College - Cal 496 A. Mabini St., Caloocan City PAASCU Accredited Level Ill (GS) / LeYg PACUCOA Accredited Level II (BSBA, B: “ et al., 2010; Goodman et al., 2006). By Schlossberg’s Transition Theory it is related to the study for it can be utilized to answer the questions of the situation in which the adolescent women in this study found themselves, the support available to them, the challenges they faced, how they view life, and how they cope with early motherhood. In this theory, it will help the study to captures participant’s insight of their experiences in early motherhood and how they manage their transition. Conceptual Framework Teenage pregnancy, also known as adolescent pregnancy, is pregnancy in a female under the age of 20. Pregnancy can occur with sexual intercourse after the start of ovulation, which can be before the first menstrual period but usually occurs after the onset of periods. Teenage pregnancy remains an important and complex issue around the world. The framework shows the effects that adolescent mothers’ have. These may include both physical effects which are lack of education and financial problems. Mental effects which are depression and mood swings. The framework also shows the benefits that you can get on our product and the institutions you can go for help. 12 La Consolacion College - Cal 496 A. The role of income came out strongly in the discussions with the teenage girls that took part in my Honours study. They argued that teenage pregnancy had changed them, from being young girls relying on family, to becoming mothers with someone else relying on them, thus seeing themselves as responsible adults. According to the participants who took part in their Honours study, teenage pregnancy and in particular, motherhood was a revelation. It taught them not only independence, but also, they had also learned to think and care for someone else other than themselves. The majority of adolescent pregnancies and births are unplanned (Sedgh, Finer, Bankole, Eilers, & Singh, 2015), often resulting in affected adolescents being stigmatized (Maly et al., 2017). This can have many negative social and economic effects on the girls, their families, and communities as a whole. Furthermore, most girls who get pregnant before the age of 20 years struggle to adjust to their new roles as mothers (Ngum Chi Watts et al., 2015). Adolescents are emotionally and psychologically not prepared for motherhood and, thus, experience a high rate of prenatal and postnatal depression (Hodgkinson, Beers, Southammakosane, & Lewin, 2014). As stated by Dlamini (2002). Cultural norms and values could be the deterioration of teenage mother’s empowerment and could come up to af 20 La Consolacion College - Cal 496 A. A study of Ehlers (2003), found that the female adolescents who were poor students with low educational aspirations were more likely to become teenage mothers than were their high-achieving peers. On the other hand, he also stated some of the causes of teenage pregnancy such as lack of parental guidance, adolescent sexual behaviour, and inadequate knowledge about safe sex. Lack of parental guidance: Most people evade their children from talking about sex. In some cases, they provide false information regarding sex and discourage their children to participate in any informative discussion about sex. Adolescent sexual behaviour: Some of the adolescents, peer pressure is a major factor that encourage the teenage boys and girls to give way in sexual activities. Inadequate knowledge about safe sex: Most adolescents are unaware of safe sex. They probably have no access to the traditional methods of preventing pregnancy. And the main reason behind is that they are either too embarrassed or fear to seek information about it. According to Williams (2005) adolescents encountered more problems during pregnancy and child birth than older women. The long- term effects of pregnancies are far reaching and teenage mothers face difficulties such as dropping out of school. And also there are some challenges that they encountered such as: the father of the 161 child were not willing to support or even denied for being a father and non- acceptance of pregnancy by the adolescents’ parents. (Hao & Cherlin, 2004; Meade &Ickovics, 2005) Adolescent pregnancy and child birth impose difficult long-term outcomes and have adverse effects not only on the young mother, but also on her child that a negative perspective on teen pregnancy leads to a negative view of pregnant teens. The young woman who becomes pregnant sets in motion a series of events that ultimately leads to the tragedy of a teen birth. The pregnant teen becomes a statistic and assumptions are made about her character, intelligence and maturity. Young mothers are often well-aware of these assumptions. According to (Paranjothy 2009) Pregnancy and childbirth during the teenage years were found to increase the risk of poor health and wellbeing for both the mother and the baby. As Stated by (Sadler 2007) who also found that life stress events, particularly homelessness, could lead to poor psychological well- af 22 La Consolacion College - Cal 496 A. Therefore, this is one of the primary reason how the apparently challenging and anxiety-inducing instance becomes a positive experience. Battle (1992) identified, from the most disadvantaged teenage young mothers, the feeling of wanting to be off the road of desolation in the future where the fulfilment of their roles is anticipated to become tough and struggling. Battle (1992) identified, from the most disadvantaged teenage young mothers, the feeling of wanting to be off the road of desolation in the future where the fulfilment of their roles is anticipated to become tough and struggling. According to (Okeyo, 2012) Teenage pregnancy is a global issue and a major contributor to school drop-out among girls. Permanent expulsion was one of the solutions made for teenage pregnancy but this has been proven ineffective and unfair to the girls. Now there is a return to school policy where a student is temporarily dismissed from school due to teenage pregnancy to further pursue their education. af 25 La Consolacion College - Cal 496 A. LOCAL STUDY According to the study conducted by Salvador (2017) Philippines has been one of the Asian countries which shares similar situation. National Demographic and Health Survey (2016), 1 in 10 Filipino Women aged 15-19 is already pregnant with 1st child. Teenage Pregnancies are often associated with social development issues such as lack of education and poverty. This is a very difficult time for a young woman who has only a short time to make a major decision. There is no easy way out. Among the major troubles’ teen moms have is not having a job to buy the necessities needed for caring for an infant or young child. Even if they do, teen moms typically work few hours because of school or quit school and earn too little money. But teen mothers are often perceived as having inadequate coping skills and social supports. There is no doubt that teen mothers are caught between separating from their families and the need for help in child rearing. Despite of any circumstances, teenage mothers are ready to face all the challenges of raising their children. They believe that af 26 La Consolacion College - Cal 496 A. They continue fighting and prove that it is not too late to make their lives better. As teen mothers learned more about themselves and honored the path that called to them, they become stronger. As they spoke up and stated the truth—at first somewhat timidly and then more clearly. They started picking up their broken pieces. CHAPTER III Methodology Methodology is the specific techniques or procedures used to select, identify, evaluate process, and analyze information about a topic or problem. The purpose of the research methodology is to know the techniques and af 27 La Consolacion College - Cal 496 A. Convenience sampling is also a type of nonprobability sampling in which people are sampled simply because they are "convenient" sources of data for researchers. Research Instrument In this study, the researchers used researcher-made questionnaires for the interview. The researcher-made questionnaires only have five set of questions that will determine their experiences. The respondents will be interviewed one ata time. The researchers have consulted an English teacher for approval of the researcher-made questionnaires and for validation of the structure of this study. Validity and Reliability To determine the validity and reliability for the questionnaires, the following items should be considered. 1. The researchers will be asking Mr. Abada (subject teacher) to validate the questionnaires. 2. The interview questionnaires consist of five (5) questions that will be utilized to provide information in the product. 3. For the information extraction questionnaire (ieq) and survey questionnaire (sq), these two questionnaires are also consisting of five (5) questions, which regards to the information gathered and in determining af 30 La Consolacion College - Cal 496 A. Then, after the validation whatever the result turns out from the questionnaires, the research team will conduct a product viewing to the teenage mothers to determine it is accurate and relatable to them. Data Gathering Procedure The researchers will be using questionnaires which are the thought to be answered by the respondents. Interview method will be also used for the gathering and collection of data and information which will be utilized for conducting the study. The number of the respondents of the researchers is 14 and all of them are teenage mothers that will be interviewed about their experiences. Informed consent is prepared, as to verify that the respondents agree to participate in the study. Data Analysis The data collected will be used in the analysis to provide the best response to a certain question. In this analysis, phenomenology serves a great use that relates to researching, analyzing and interpreting individuals or incidents in their lives that require more research and deep clarification. The data from the interviews will be obtained by the researchers and content analysis will be used. This refers to the categorization phase of af 31 La Consolacion College - Calog@art 496 A. Data analysis was concerned with organizing and making sense of the data, noting patterns, themes, categories and regularities (Cohen et al, 2003: in Tagacay, 2013). Ethical Considerations The ethical considerations are principles and values that the researchers must observe in conducting the study and in gathering information. It is associated with the ethical issues that involve humans as subjects and participants. The researchers will take into consideration the following; first the researchers will take the consent of every respondent before making them participate in the study. Second will be information security, the researchers will not disclose any information given by the respondents and as a proof there will be a consent form. Third is the privacy protection of names. The researcher will reassure the respondents that this study is purely for academic purposes, that any information about them will not be shared with others, and that their privacy is one of the researcher's top priorities. 32 La Consolacion College - Calog 496 A.
