Download Advertisements, Claims, Arguments and Appeals of Advertisers | ENG 104 and more Study notes English Language in PDF only on Docsity! ESSAY # 3 PROMPT ENG 104 Fuller This essay your final for this class. It is due on Wednesday, December 1, between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., in our regular classroom (5-244). We will NOT be having a regular class meeting on that day. I will be in the classroom the whole time. You will not be able to send me your essay via email because I need to see your rough draft and peer review pages as well. However, your reward for "having" to come to the classroom to physically give me your essay is NOT having to come to this class during finals week. Introduction: During class we have discussed/will be discussing advertisements and the claims, arguments, and appeals made by advertisers. To understand the arguments made by advertisements, we must consider who the ad's intended audience is, what the advertiser is trying to get people to buy, what statement or statements are being made by the ad, and why the advertiser is making these statements. Assignment: For your third essay, you will select an advertisement out of a popular magazine and analyze it in terms of the arguments (claims) made by the advertiser, and analyze whether the argument being made is effective. You may also wish to address the cultural issues that your ad brings to light--what does your ad say about the American perspective on sex, wealth, gender roles, consumerism, beauty, aging, fashion, etc.? Requirements: Four or more pages (word count of 950 to 1000+ words), typed in Times New Roman font, double spaced, with proper heading and pagination. Citations must be in proper MLA format and outside sources must be listed on a separate works cited page in proper MLA format. --The ad you are writing about should be stapled to the final draft of your essay. --As with your previous essays, incorrect citations will not count against you, but you must cite your sources because this is a part of academic integrity. It's also good practice for ENG 105 and other classes where you will be conducting research and citing sources. Your essay should: describe the ad in detail (you may want to devote a paragraph to describing the ad. If you choose to do this, your essay should be at least SIX paragraphs, because you will still need your introductory paragraph, concluding paragraph, and three body paragraphs.) Discuss the intended audience of the ad--who do the advertisers think will look at this ad? How can you tell? State whether the ad is effective or not--this will mostly likely be your thesis. What are the reasons the ad is effective or ineffective?
