All questions carry equal marks Breakdown of marks for each question is shown in parentheses. You are permitted to use the Faculty Standard calculators as provided. S345 2/5/03 1 1. (a) Explain briefly the non-linear behaviour of the strain gauge bridge that uses one active gauge. State how this problem is normally overcome. [4] With the aid of a suitable diagram, describe the arrangements normally used to set up the bridge for accurate measurements. [6] (b) Figure Q1 shows an instrumentation amplifier with a 20 mV dc voltage input. Calculate the voltages at points a to d inclusive and hence calculate the output voltage V 0 . Confirm this answer by quoting and using the gain equation. [10] Figure Q1 2. (a) Draw a circuit diagram of a successive approximation type of analogue to digital converter (ADC). Add a timing diagram to illustrate its mode of operation. Describe its operation. State two reasons why this is a popular ADC. [13] (b) State the function of the circuit in Figure Q2. Describe its operation. Describe, giving reasons, an engineering situation where this circuit might be preferred to the method in section (a) above. [7] Figure Q2 2/5/03 continued
