Symbolic Analysis: Interpreting the Environmental Message in WALL-E, Study notes of Communication

Symbols are such as objects, signals, gestures, signs, and words that help people to understand the world. Related to this research, the aim is for interpreting and analyzing the symbols used in the WALL-E movie. This is qualitative research. This research material derived from several sources and transcripts related to WALL-E movie are classified are used as a staple whereas the research used an interpretation theory related to the symbols used in this movie then analyzing it all. Throughout the movie, there are symbols with deeper meanings. These results indicate that there are six symbols in this movie. WALL-E movie spotlight the broken environmental management which is done by human beings themselves. In order to clean the earth, the human was replaced by robots. The moral issue in WALL-E movie can be reflected in real life, relation to the structuring and environmental management with the interests of the environment in any action relating to all elements of the environment. Keywords: Symbol, WALL-E movie. Introduction The world is contained with symbols, such as in our daily life. In some cultures, a gold ring is a symbol of marriage people. Related to the language, language is a symbol used by the people to communicate. The symbols in the language used in order to transfer written communication and transfer into spoken communication. This research practically is analyzing the symbols used in Wall-e movie. This research focuses on interpreting and analyzing the symbols to criticize our society to be aware of global warming or our earth nowadays. WALL-E is an animated movie which is the main character in this movie is a robot named Wall-e. This robot designed to clean up and shaped all the rubbish covered in earth become a block of rubbish. The earth condition in this movie is destroyed, uninhabited by humans, animals and plants, full cover pollution and rubbish. Although the earth is not proper to place for living, on the other hand, there is a tiny creature called cockroach is living on earth. The cockroach is one of symbol for the researcher to be noted, interpreted and analyzed later on. That was one example symbol in this movie. Throughout the movie, there are some symbols with deeper meanings. From those explanations, the writer is interested in interpreting and analyzing the symbols problem concerned on destroyed earth and it is the relation with human homework related to the earth condition nowadays. The writer is 2 interested in doing this research because of several factors: the writer was really interested and have a big curiosity in symbols, this movie emerged due to the earth issues that being forgotten by people nowadays, for example, dirty environment because of rubbish that thrown by people every day, everywhere and every second. Moreover, Wall-e is an interesting movie with deep criticism all the human who is living on this planet, namely earth, to take care of earth again. Research Method In this research, the researcher uses a qualitative method whereas practically the researcher searching the symbols, then interpreting the symbols, after that analyzing the interpreting result. The type of this research is library research, whereas the researcher uses the movies and the scripts of the movies as the main data. Data Collection There are two kinds of data in this research, those are the main and supporting data. The main data in this research is the symbols used in Wall-e movie, and the supporting data is the interpreting the symbols itself based on the related resources, continue with analyzing the interpreting results. In order to collect the data, the researcher watches this movie several times until collected all the symbols. After this, the researcher interpreting the symbols based on the story of this movie. After interpreting the symbols, the researcher analyzing the data based on the story told about. As a result, there are nine symbols in collecting data. Those are wall-e, cockroach, seedling, axiom, obese passengers, auto, BNL (buy n large), display system, and eve. Data Analysis Before analyzing the data collection, the researcher interpreting the symbols first. Here the result of interpreting the symbols. (1) wall-e means the robot was living in the earth; (2) cockroach means the wall-e’s friend; (3) seedling means the living plant; (4) axiom mean the spacecraft name; (5) obbese passangers means the passangers who are living in the spacecraft; (6) auto means the pilot assistant in the spacecraft; (7) BNL (buy n large) means a company names in spacecraft; (8) display system means the system use spacecraft; and (9) eve means the only female robot from BNL spacecraft that delegated her to the earth.
