Comm 1008 Analysis of Self-Presentation Walden University Comm 1008: Interpersonal Communication An individual’s personal identity is their self-image they develop throughout their life. A person’s identity can change based on how they want to be perceived under certain circumstances or in particular settings. Most people have a professional identity that differs from their personal one since they have to carry themselves in a certain way in their career. In a professional setting, the main characteristics of my identity include organized, friendly, hard-working, serious, timely, and dependent. In any professional setting, I ensure that I demonstrate all of my positive qualities that make me a great and indispensable employee. Employers typically want employees that are dependable, on time, and friendly. This is the side I show at work as opposed to my personal side, which is a lot more laid back and not necessarily professional. In my personal identity, there are some characteristics that overlap with my professional identity, such as I am still dependable and friendly. However, I am a lot more relaxed and not as serious in my personal life. My personal identity characteristics consists of dependable, friendly, goofy, funny, playful, trustworthy, and messy. In a professional setting, I always do my best to not be shy because my job usually revolves around customer service and requires me to talk to people most of the day. The way that you present yourself in different environments can alter a person’s perspective of you. According to our sources from this week, “Success at work starts with positive perceptions” (McCarthy, 2011). In all aspects of life, I consider how I want to be perceived by others, and I do my best to carry out the actions necessary. For example, I want people to think of me as someone they can count on and that will always be there to help. To accomplish this, I try to take every opportunity possible to lend a helping hand or to be that listening ear. This is important to do in a professional setting as well. The first steps of transforming how you are perceived at work is to understand how people currently view you, and to identify how you want to be viewed (Miller, n.d.). Only after you complete these steps, then you can begin to alter how people perceive you. If you do not change people’s view of you, then it is possible that they would maintain negative
