Shallowness = a character flaw or ingrained in ones DNA?
"A character flaw, which is something that can eventually be fixed (much like someone who is simply shy who can eventually become more outgoing and confident)?
Or can it be a trait someone is born with (much like a personality disorder)?"

It can be both, but it is generally not genetic. Environment and upbringing are the predominant causes. If your family, friends and associates are shallow, you will probably be shallow too. Asking this in the philosophy forum proves that there is at least some hope for you.
