Agham Tao: My Anthropological Diary In The Time Of Pandemic – Ethnicity, Race, and Racism ETHNIC AND RACIAL DISCRIMINATION People differs in race and ethnicity which makes individual unique but a significant part of a group. However, this difference somehow raised different prejudices which gave birth to ethnic and racial discrimination. I have always thought that I have never been subjected to such discrimination as I do not have any features that people find different so people would insult them. However, during my childhood I was always mocked for having broad nose and a dark skin color, I have never thought of it as a discrimination against me as I thought it was just simple remarks from my relatives and friends. Growing up in a society wherein discrimination is part of people’s lives, I have seen that even such simple remarks is somehow a subtle discrimination against me as those features belong to my roots; and though it seems unharmful at first, after some time, those simple remarks subjected me to hate a part of myself. I started looking in the mirror less often as it would show me a reflection of what is wrong with me and my body. My experience was not that severe yet it shattered my confidence ultimately, and now I cannot stop thinking how much more to those people who experiences discriminations just because they seem different and they did not pass society’s standards. There is no silver lining in this experience as I believe that no should ever have to hate a part of themselves because of ethnic and racial stereotypes. As a Catholic, I was always taught to love myself as God created human in His image; but anthropologically speaking I could now say that I am part of those astounding evolution, the nature and the universe took its time to carefully craft human. All of us are part of that evolution process, and no one has the right to tell you that there is something wrong with you. If there is anything I have learned from this experience is that sometime, society has a disturbed standards and ideals. We are all equal, indifference does not make one inferior, it just makes an individual unique and a person.
