Teamwork and Negotiation Exercise: Completing Tasks with Limited Resources, Papers of History of Education

An exercise designed for university students to develop teamwork, negotiation, critical thinking, and following directions skills. Students are divided into groups, each with unique supplies, and must complete tasks by negotiating with other groups for necessary materials. The ideal group size is 3-6, with observers noting the emergence of leaders and followers. This activity can be linked with bruce tuckman's group development theory for debriefing. Completing tasks includes making various paper shapes and a flag.

Download Teamwork and Negotiation Exercise: Completing Tasks with Limited Resources and more Papers History of Education in PDF only on Docsity! Are you Equal to the Task? Split your group into four teams. Each team will be given a large envelope with various material inside. The idea is for each group to complete the tasks listed on a 'task sheet'. The catch is no envelope contains all of the necessary materials to complete the task. Therefore teams will have to negotiate to use each others supplies. The instructor did not explain that we needed to negotiate ... we found out as we tried to complete the task. The ideal group size would be 3 to 6. It is a good idea to select 2 or 3 observers who will wander around the room and note what is happening as to the emergence of leaders, followers, etc. You can tie in some leadership theory as well. Also, if the group has not performed together previously ... linking Bruce Tuckman's theory of group development is helpful as a debrief with the instructor and observers articulating what they have observed. This is a good exercise for leadership and negotiation, critical thinking, working as a group, and as a lead-in to discussing the importance of following directions on a test. GROUP MATERIAL: Group 1: scissors, ruler, paper clips, pencils, two 4-inch squares of red paper, and two 4-inch squares of white paper. Group 2: scissors, glue, and two sheets each of gold paper, white paper, and blue paper, each 8 x 11 inches. Group 3: felt-tipped markers and two sheets each of green paper, white paper, and gold paper, each 8 x 11 inches. Group 4: five sheets of paper, 8 x 11 inches - one green, one gold, one blue, one red, and one purple. (Each group receives one copy of the task sheet below and one envelope with the supplies listed above). Each group is to complete the following tasks: 1. Make a 3 x 3 inch square of white paper. 2. Make a 4 x 2 inch rectangle of gold paper. 3. Make a 3 x 5 inch T-shaped piece of green and white paper. 4. Make a four-link paper chain, each link in a different color. 5. Make a 4 x 4 inch flag in any three colors. The first group to complete the tasks is the winner. Groups may negotiate with each other for the use of needed materials and tools on any mutually agreeable basis.
