This issue is very controversial. Some people believe spending money on the military is necessary because countries with large militaries are more stable. Other people believe that spending money on the military is unwise because large militaries may actually provoke wars. However, spending substantial amounts of money on the military is appropriate because countries with large militaries are more stable and because strong militaries strengthen the men and women who serve in them. First, significant military spending is necessary because countries with large militaries are more stable. Large, powerful militaries deter attack. For example, it would be suicidal for anyone to directly attack the United States, Russia or China. These countries possess nuclear weapons and spend hundreds of billions of dollars each year on their militaries. If anyone were bold enough to attack one of these countries, they would face utter destruction by an overwhelming military response. Moreover, countries with large militaries have more stable societies. For instance, Germany, Korea, and the United Kingdom spend tens of billions of dollars each year on their militaries. As a result, their citizens do not have to fear invasion or war. They can raise families, save money, invest in businesses, and reliably plan for the future. Life in a country with a powerful military is more peaceful. Secondly, significant military spending is beneficial because it strengthens the men and women who serve in the armed forces. Militaries with sufficient resources can pay their service members well. They can also provide housing, health care, childcare, and education. These benefits strengthen individuals and their families. Strong families are the foundation of a strong society.
