ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY BORACAY: A CESSPOOL The Philippines was known because of its tourist spots and one of them is the Boracay. The Ati people was originally living in Boracay, a small island located at Malay, Aklan, in the Philippines. Their tradition states that the name Boracay came first from the Inati words “bora” which means bubbles and “bocay” which means white. Another story said that its name came from the local word “borac” which means white cotton which is like the color and texture of the Boracay’s sand. As time passed by, Boracay became known to the whole world and its beaches were honored as the best in the world. The Boracay’s most visited area is the White Beach. And its best to kite board/kite surf, wind surf and scuba dive when it is the Amihan season. In the year 2012, Boracay became the second best beach in the world according to the Philippine Department of Tourism. And according to Malay municipal records there are more than 2 million tourists visited the island in 2017. Nowadays, one of the caused of depression of the people especially the residents and those who work in the Boracay is the closing of it. And the caused of the closure of the Boracay is because of the rehabilitation. It is to dispose the sewages and to take care of some environmental problems. It will be closed in six months starting from April 26, 2018 on Thursday. The National Economic and Development Authority(NEDA) accepted the fact that closing the Boracay requires billions of money but to maintain its beauty, it should be done. “Right now, we must look to the future and take a concerted effort to improve the conditions of Boracay,” Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia said on Friday. The agency’s regional office also added,”The Boracay closure, not withstanding its social and economic impact will pave the way for the rehabilitation and improvement of the solid waste management and sewerage systems, along with the protection of ecologically fragile areas in the island.” President Rodrigo Duterte described the Boracay as a “cesspool” because of those sewages on February in a speech. He had also said,”You go into the water, it’s smelly. Smells of what? S***.” This is all because of the local government in Boracay failing to enforce rules and regulations in marine conservation, garbage and sanitation and many more. Closing the Boracay won’t really solve the problem. If they just disposed those sewages and took care some of the environment problems, the problem won’t be completely solved. You know why? Since the root of these problems were on the people, the residents and the workers who’re in the Boracay. Those hotels, inns and resorts had been neglecting the rules and instead of building their own sewage, they’ve been dumping waste or garbage into canals. Because of this, it increased the coliform bacteria level which can cause diarrhea. The Boracay will be a much better place if the people learned some discipline, but thinking about it, it is impossible since millions of people are going to Boracay. The only thing left to do is to have a person guard at every areas in the Boracay to maintain its cleanliness.
