Assignment: Making your own Trichopteran Dichotomous Key Make a Dichotomous Key for the Families and Genera of the Trichopterans available in lab today. It needs to be complete, accurate, and useable (by someone other than yourself). Format: It can be verbal or a mix of both pictures and descriptions (this type is most usable). Be creative and use as many type of media or programs as necessary. PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Photoshop, hand drawings, etc... Do not copy couplets verbatim from Merritt and Cummins, that’s academic dishonesty and you’ll get a zero for it. You’ll have two weeks to complete this assignment and I’ll accept either a paper or an electronic version. I’ll grade on completeness, accuracy, usability and aesthetics. When constructing keys, keep the following in mind: Use the same character (s) for each couplet, Ex. 1. Tarsus slender 1’ Tarsus broad •Use constant characteristics rather than variable ones like color. •When possible use measurements or ratios rather than terms like "large" and "small". •Use characteristics that are generally available to the user of the key rather than seasonal characteristics or those seen only in the field. •Make the choice a positive one - something "is" instead of "is not" (see example in first bullet). •If possible, start both choices of a pair with the same word. •Precede the descriptive terms with the name of the part to which they apply
