Health psychology Moral dilemma By: Prerna Sethi B.A Psychology Honours 3rd year A moral dilemma is a situation or event that questions the moral of a person in a temporary situation. A moral dilemma is a situation where: 1. You are presented with two or more actions, all of which you have the ability to perform. 2. There are moral reasons for you to choose each of the actions. 3. You cannot perform all of the actions and have to choose which action, or actions when there are three or more choices, to perform. Moral dilemmas are serious issues in workplaces like military, politics, and medicine, where human lives can be determined on a regular basis. Moral dilemmas can also be found at lesser degree in the school yard where children have to choose one friend over another. Example of moral dilemmas :-  You are a paramedic and you have been called to help a young boy who was in a car accident. On the way to the emergency, you get in an accident with your elderly uncle, who you know and love dearly. He is knocked out, but you are able to determine that he is probably not terribly injured and is likely to survive without immediate medical attention. However, if you stop to help your uncle, or even call backup, you know for sure that the boy will die. The only way you can save the boy is if you drive away immediately. Would you: a. Stop for your uncle or b. Leave and help the boy.  There is a trolley coming down the tracks and ahead, there are five people tied to the tracks and are unable to move. The trolley will continue coming and will kill the five people. However, in this situation, you are standing on a bridge above the train tracks and you can see the train coming. There is a man standing next to you, who is so enormous and heavy that if he places himself in front of the oncoming train, it will hit and kill him but the train will stop. So you have two choices (a) Do nothing and the five people will die. (b) Push the big guy down the bridge. He will be killed but will stop the trolley and save the five people.  Your family is vacationing alone on a private stretch of beach with no lifeguard. Your daughter and your niece, both 7, are best friends and eager to get into the water. You caution them to wait until the water calms some, but they defy you and sneak in anyway. You soon hear screams of distress and find them both caught in a strong current. You are the only swimmer strong enough to save them, but you can only save one at a time. Your niece is a very poor swimmer and likely won't make it much longer. Your daughter is a stronger swimmer, but only has a 50% chance of holding on long enough for you to come back for her.  Priya is a doctor. One of his patients, whom he has diagnosed as HIV positive, is about to receive a blood transfusion prior to being released from the hospital. He has told priya, in the
