Encephalitis An infection of the brain TERM 2 Neisseria Meningitis DEFINITION 2 The leading cause of bacterial meningitus amoung young adults in the U.S. Part of the body's normal flora If it enter the nervous system, it will cause meningitis The vaccine for it does not protect against other types of meningitus TERM 3 Haemophilis influenzae DEFINITION 3 The leading cause of meningitis among children in the U.S. Part of the normal flora TERM 4 Streptococcus pnuemoniae DEFINITION 4 "Pnuemonococcal pnuemonia" Can cause bacterial meningitits Prevenar vaccine is used to preven TERM 5 Clostridium tetani DEFINITION 5 Produces spores Causes tetanus Tetanus toxin is the most potent toxin known The vaccine is made by treating the tetanus toxin with formaldehyde, rendering it a toxid (an inactive toxin) It is then injected into the patient, which allows antibodies to be created
