Newton's Laws of Motion: Balanced and Unbalanced Forces, Inertia, and Acceleration, Exercises of Acting

Mechanics of Solids and FluidsClassical MechanicsVector calculus

The concepts of balanced and unbalanced forces, newton's laws of motion, and inertia. It covers the definitions, differences, and applications of these physics principles. Students will learn how to calculate force, mass, acceleration, and net force, as well as understand the relationship between force and mass, and newton's laws of action-reaction.

What you will learn

  • What is the definition of force and how is it measured?
  • What is the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration according to Newton's Laws of Motion?
  • How does Newton's Law of Action-Reaction apply to rocket launches?
  • How does Newton's Law of Inertia explain an object's resistance to change in motion?
  • What is the difference between balanced and unbalanced forces?

Learning Targets: Balanced and Unbalanced Forces and Newton’s Laws of Motion (TEKS 8.6A) Demonstrate and calculate how unbalanced forces change the speed or direction of an object’s motion. 1. Define force and identify the unit of measurement. Force is any push or pull on an object and measured in Newtons (N). 2. Explain the difference between balanced and unbalanced forces. Balanced forces occur when forces acting on an object are equal and opposite in direction causing the net force to equal 0. Balanced forces cause NO change in an objects motion. Unbalanced forces occur when forces are not equal and cause acceleration (any change in an objects motion). 3. Describe the motion of an object when all forces are balanced. Objects are at rest or moving at a constant velocity (speed and direction). 4. Describe the motion of an object when forces are unbalanced. Objects are accelerating – starting to move/speeding up, slowing down/stopping, and or changing directions/turning. 5. What is net force and how is it determined? Net force is the combination of all forces acting on an object. It is determined by adding or subtracting forces acting in pairs. If forces are acting in opposite directions, you subtract the forces to get the net force. If forces are acting in the same direction, you add the forces together to get the net force. 6. What is the net force equal to when all forces are balanced? Net Force = 0 7. How do you calculate the amount of force and what is the unit of measurement for force? Force = Mass X Acceleration (F = MA) and the unit of measurement is Newtons(N) (TEKS 8.6C) Investigate and describe applications of Newton’s Laws of Inertia, Law of Force and Acceleration, and Law of Action-Reaction such as in vehicle restraints, sports activities, amusement park rides, Earth’s tectonic activities, and rocket launches. 8. Define Inertia and explain Newton’s 1st Law of Inertia. Inertia is an objects resistance to change in motion. Newton’s law of inertia states that an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion at the same speed and direction unless acting on by an unbalanced force. Therefore, because of inertia, objects will keep doing what they are doing unless forces become unbalanced. 9. Describe how Newton’s Law of inertia applies to vehicle restraints. Vehicle restraints are used as an unbalanced force that changes your motion when the vehicle changes motion. 10. What is the motion of an object when forces acting on it are balanced? Objects are at rest or moving at a constant speed and direction (velocity). 11. Define acceleration and explain what causes objects to accelerate. List the 3 ways objects accelerate. Acceleration is the rate of change in motion (velocity – speed and direction). Unbalanced forces cause objects to accelerate which includes speeding up/starting to move, slowing down/stopping, and changing directions. 12. What is the motion of an object when forces acting on it are unbalanced? Objects are speeding up/starting to move, slowing down/stopping, and or changing directions. 13. Explain Newton’s 2nd Law of Acceleration and include the formula to calculate Force. Newton’s Law of Acceleration states that the acceleration of an object depends on the net force and the mass of the object, Force = Mass x Acceleration. The greater the net force the greater the acceleration. The greater the mass the less the acceleration.
