APPENDICES INTERVIEW SECTION I Interviewer: “Based on your experience writing the thesis, are you facing a problem?” Interviewee: “Yes of course” Interviewer: “Is that an academic problem? or non-academic problem?” Interviewee: “Both” Interviewe: “For your academic problem, what problem is that?” Interviewee: “Lack of vocabulary” Interviewe: “Based on my experience, vocabulary is basic course for English major students, isn’t it?” Interviewee: “Yes” Interviewer: “So, how can you still have problem with vocabulary?” Interviewee: “Sometimes I didn't know what vocab I should use to write what I'm thinking about. Sometimes I forgot the English vocab of a word that I will use” Interviewer: “Is the vocabulary lecture you got in the last few semesters less effective, so you still have problems in the vocabulary?” Interviewee: “Maybe it happens because English is a broad language, has a lot of vocab that we need to learn, whereas we don't use English every day, so mastering the vocab will be a little difficult because we are not used to it” Interviewer: “Then, what do you do to solve it?” Interviewee: “I study harder by reading the dictionary more often and reading books in English more often, and practice to memorize vocabulary more often” Interviewer: “In solving the problem itself, are there any obstacles preventing you?” Interviewee: “Yes of course, the laziness” Interviewer: “So, what effort do you do?” Interviewee: “By remembering parents at home, they work hard for my college fees, so I must not be lazy. So, I will be eager to learn again” Interviewer: “Now for your non-academic problem, what kind of problem is that?” Interviewee: “It is problem with my advisors” Interviewer: “Can you explain it more detail?” Interviewee: “Sometimes I don't understand the will of my lecturer from the way she corrects my thesis. She gives me scribbles, question marks, and I thought hard about it. Besides, she is a busy person, and because of that she often empties our thesis guidance schedule” Interviewer: “Does your non-academic problem have an impact to your thesis writing process?” Interviewee: “Yes of course, it makes me longer in finishing my thesis” Interviewer: “So, what do you do to solve your problem with your advisor?” Interviewee: “I can only be patient, study harder, and of course pray harder. There isn't much something I can do as a student” Interviewer: “Besides the problem with your advisor, is there another non- academic problem that you face?” Interviewee: “Of course it has super big impact for me; I didn't touch my thesis for a year just because I was scared and lazy” INTERVIEW SECTION III Interviewer: “Based on your experience writing the thesis, are you facing a problem?” Interviewee: “Yes, always” Interviewer: “Is that an academic problem? or non-academic problem?” Interviewee: “Academic yes, non-academic yes” Interviewer: “For your academic problem, what problem is that?” Interviewee: “Messy grammar” Interviewer: “Based on my experience, grammar is basic course for English major students, isn’t it?” Interviewee: “Yes” Interviewer: “So, how can you still have problem with grammar?” Interviewee: “I never understood while learning grammar” Interviewer: “Is the grammar lecture you got in the last few semesters less effective, so you still have problems in the grammar?” Interviewee: “I thought it was effective, but because of my low comprehension it was difficult for me to understand grammar” Interviewer: “Then, what do you do to solve it?” Interviewee: “I often ask for an explanation from my friends” Interviewer: “In solving the problem itself, are there any obstacles preventing you?” Interviewee: “Yes, feeling lazy and sleepy are my main obstacles” Interviewer: “So, what effort do you do?” Interviewee: “I made a big note that I put on the wall of my boarding room, a motivation for me when I feel lazy and then I read it, I became excited again” Interviewer: “Now for your non-academic problem, what kind of problem is that?” Interviewee: “My advisor is a perfectionist, and my ability is moderate, so I get a lot of revisions, many and many times” Interviewer: “Can you explain it more detail?” Interviewee: “Yes, I often get revisions, such as in the arrangement that must be really neat, punctuation that must be really appropriate. And again, when my first advisor has accepted my revision, my second advisor will still revise it, even replace the theories, and they contradicts each other, making me confused” Interviewer: “Does your non-academic problem have an impact to your thesis writing process?” Interviewee: “Yes” Interviewer: “So, what do you do to solve your problem with your advisor?” Interviewee: “Pray harder and study grammar harder” Interviewer: “Besides the problem with your advisor, is there another non- academic problem that you face?” Interviewee: “I have a problem when I have to do a thesis, but my friend invited me to hang out.” Interviewer: “So, it is a time management problem, and what effort did you do?” Interviewee: “Yes, time management. I used to obey my friends often, but now I realize that I am already in my old semester and have to graduate soon, so I now often reject their invitations” Interviewer: “Now for your non-academic problem, what kind of problem is that?” Interviewee: “I have difficulty in managing my time to play games and do my thesis” Interviewer: “Can you explain it more detail?” Interviewee: “I like to forget the time when I played the game, I started playing the game at 9 pm, and suddenly it was midnight and the day had changed, it felt really fast” Interviewer: “Does your non-academic problem have an impact to your thesis writing process?” Interviewee: “Yes, the process of working on my thesis became longer” Interviewer: “So, what do you do to solve your problem?” Interviewee: “Uninstall my game and focus in my thesis” Interviewer: “Besides the problem with your time management, is there another non-academic problem that you face?” Interviewee: “No” Interviewer: “From those academic and non-academic problems, which problem that has more impact to your thesis writing?” Interviewee: “Non-academic, because when I cannot manage my time to do my thesis, it becomes the end of all, but when I don’t understand about grammar, I still have a friend that can help me” INTERVIEW SECTION V Interviewer: “Based on your experience writing the thesis, are you facing a problem?” Interviewee: “Yes, grammar and advisor” Interviewer: “So, those are the academic and non-academic problems” Interviewee: “Yes” Interviewer: “For your academic problem, what problem is that?” Interviewee: “I am very confused about 16 formula tenses in English” Interviewer: “Based on my experience, grammar is basic course for English major students, isn’t it?” Interviewee: “Yes” Interviewer: “So, how can you still have problem with grammar?” Interviewee: “I am very confused about 16 formula tenses in English, even the names of the formulas I do not know. Repeatedly reading books about grammar but still do not understand. I think it is my fault because I did not pay attention when I was in college. Even though I got a lecturer who I thought was very professional, I didn't even pay attention, so it happened like this.” Interviewer: “Is the grammar lecture you got in the last few semesters less effective, so you still have problems in the grammar?” Interviewee: “My self made it ineffective” Interviewer: “Then, what do you do to solve it?” Interviewee: “I asked my friend to explain each of the tenses and I asked him to correct my thesis grammar” Interviewer: “In solving the problem itself, are there any obstacles preventing you?” Interviewee: “Yes, because my friend is still doing his thesis also, I cannot ask him to help me every time I need” Interviewer: “So, what effort do you do?” Interviewee: “I often work on my thesis and ask my other friends to help me when my friend I usually ask for help is busy” Interviewer: “Now for your non-academic problem, what kind of problem is that?” Interviewee: “My family at home always calls me and tells me to go home, they know that I have no more courses on campus except the thesis, so they often ask me home. Furthermore, my father did not hesitate to pick me up in Malang, this was indeed fun, but it disturbs me in doing my thesis. The house was very crowded, so I could not concentrate when I was trying to do a thesis.” Interviewer: “So, your non-academic problem has an impact to your thesis writing process, right” Interviewee: “Yes, of course” Interviewer: “So, what do you do to solve your problem with your family?” Interviewee: “I tried to explain to my family my obligations as a final semester student, and I sought their understanding, I rejected to home and choose to stay at Malang to do my thesis” Interviewer: “Besides the problem with your family, is there another non-academic problem that you face?” Interviewee: “No, I think it is enough”. Interviewer: “From those academic and non-academic problems, which problem that has more impact to your thesis writing?” Interviewee: “Of course, thesis is writing activity while I lack of grammar that I should use to write my thesis” Interviewer: “So, what do you do to solve your problem with your advisor?” Interviewee: “Study harder about grammar” Interviewer: “Besides the academic problem, is there another non-academic problem that you face?” Interviewee: “For non-academic I think no”. INTERVIEW SECTION VII Interviewer: “Based on your experience writing the thesis, are you facing a problem?” Interviewee: “Yes I am” Interviewer: “Is that an academic problem? or non-academic problem?” Interviewee: “Non-academic” Interviewe: “Non-academic only?” Interviewee: “Yes” Interviewer: “So, what kind of problem is that?” Interviewee: “Problem with my advisors” Interviewer: “Can you explain it more detail?” Interviewee: “I was afraid when I would meet my advisor because she was an idealist. I often make mistakes that make her angry.” Interviewer: “What kind of mistake did you make?” Interviewee: “It's like when I didn't really master the theory, forgot the title of the book from the theory I took, being blank when asked by her, came late, and was wrong in speaking and many more”. Interviewer: “Does it have an impact to your writing thesis process?” Interviewee: “Of course it makes me a little longer” Interviewer: “So, what do you do to solve your problem with your advisor?” Interviewee: “Learning to be a better person, polite, and not careless, study harder, and of course understand my advisor’s characteristics” Interviewer: “Besides the problem with your advisor, is there another non- academic problem that you face?” Interviewee: “My thesis writing process time always disturbed by my mobile legends” Interviewer: “What effort did you do to solve it?” Interviewee: “Made a special schedule for my game, I used to be able to play 5 hours a day, now only 2 hours. So, ya I limit it, the most of my time is for thesis and resting myself” Interviewer: “From that non-academic problems, which problem that has more impact to your thesis writing?” Interviewee: “Those two non-academic problems are the same, they have big impact for me”
