One must have self-discipline to be successful. At the beginning of my career, my set goals that I thought I wanted was not true. I was one to go to work, do my job, clock out and just get by. Now, my goals have become bigger and more challenging. I finally realized that I wasnt truly happy with my current situation and job status. So, by making goals I looked at the big picture and the steps I needed to take to get there. I always liked the quote oSuccessful people take the stairs, not the elevator?. One must have self-discipline to be successful. At the beginning of my career, my set goals that I thought I wanted was not true. I was one to go to work, do my job, clock out and just get by. Now, my goals have become bigger and more challenging. I finally realized that I wasn’t truly happy with my current situation and job status. So, by making goals I looked at the big picture and the steps I needed to take to get there. I always liked the quote “Successful people take the stairs, not the elevator”. One step at a time somedays one may take two steps back but it’s a learning block as one may call it. That’s when I decided to go back to pursue my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and wanted to move up the career ladder. It has been found that people who have an internal locus of control are generally more productive, driven, and more welcoming than people who rely on external mechanism for motivation (Pignatelli, 2015). It has had its struggles and frustration but one must remember at the end it will be all worth it. One must always see the good in something than to focus on the bad. Focusing on the bad will result in a domino effect of catastrophe. My father and mother taught a strong work ethic into me and my brother, which is the reason why I am a hard worker and want to be successful. My father always told me, “be all you can be.” I reflect on that daily as a reminder and ask myself for that day was I the best I could be or did I fall short on something. If one falls shorts it’s a great stepping stone to learn from and work harder to achieve what you’re wanting out of something. My parents set the foundation for me, and I know who I am, where I came from, and where I am wanting to go in life. The goals that I want to achieve may change throughout my journey but my foundation of being a driven hard worker is still who I always will be. An example of a situation a leader used as a theory to motivate me was during my current job to obtain my registry in respiratory therapy. I was only certified; to become a registered therapist one must take two national exams and pass both. One exam was multiple choice and you had to get a higher cut score to be able to take the Clinical Sims the second exam. If one did not get the high cut score one had to retake it until you achieve the high cut score. My leader helped motivate me by telling me the hospital was giving a merit increase of all therapist that received their registry part. So, more money was a great reason to study and work towards this. My leader guided me out of my comfort zone with an opportunity and challenge so I could better my career standings. My leader provided all the information for study material and seminars that were locally being offered for successful passive of the exams. To get ready, I attended one of the seminars and found out that the hospital would pay for it to better my education and career. She is servant leader that developed opportunity for me and other staffers to transform the department future and recognized potential in her staff. She still remains one of the best leaders that I have ever had. Her strongest asset as a leader was her ability to meet her direct reports where they were at professionally and knew how to communicate to each one of us on an individual level to bring out the best of us even what didn’t work for us in the work environment. It was her strong leadership that I finished passed and received my registry for respiratory therapy. In the end the hospital paid me back for the exam pricing too. She is still my manager today at my current job and continues to motivate me to meet my goals on a personal and professional level. In contrast, one of my leaders in the past was not good in leadership role. She was more on processes and did not try to motivate the staff or the department as a whole. One of the hugest
