The first assignment for the photographic expression i course at montgomery college's germantown campus art department. Students are required to take photographs of man-made structures in their neighborhood using a kodak t-max iso 400 film, develop the film, make contact prints, and consult with the instructor for final selection. No humans, animals, plants, or cars are allowed in the photographs. The assignment aims to help students notice the details of their picture-taking process and improve their skills.

While photographing the subject fill out Form 1 2. Develop the film 3. Make contact print 4. Consult with the instructor on selection from contact sheet 5. Do a test strip 6. Make enlargements from chosen frames 7. Fill out Form 2 for each enlargement 8. Consult with instructor for final selection 9. Mount 2 chosen prints for presentation / critique Go around your neighborhood and take pictures of man-made structures, for example- a building, doors, windows, staircases, electrical outlets, door knobs, furniture, pipes, wires, water fountains, etc. Do not take pictures of humans, animals, plants* or cars. Please note: By filling out Form 1 you slow down the process of picture taking so that you notice what it is you are doing. Are you exposing the film correctly? Correct shutter speed? Correct f stop? A filled out form will help to pinpoint any problems you may be experiencing and to a large extent eliminate guesswork. Please keep in mind: Are you "filling up" the viewfinder with enough of the subject? Are you moving around enough for the best angle? Have you found an interesting pattern? A dramatic lighting situation? *If you photograph on campus you may use some of the plantings found there. phoasign 1
