BHR 3351 Unit VII Article Critique Columbia Southern University BHR 3351 Human Relations and Development Unit VII Article Critique I choose for my critique and article by Bonnie A. Osif. She is an Assistant Engineering Librarian at Penn State University. The author’s main point of the article is show differences in workplace personalities between real life and the fictional world. She states that most difficulties that occur at the workplace are temporary and correctable. She implies that comic strips like Dilbert and the American version of “The Office” are humorous and tend to remind us of how maybe our workplaces are not as bad as theirs. She goes on to remind us that difficult people, from the minor annoyance to the seriously hostile or dangerous, can inhibit our workplace and that their behavior have far-reaching and serious consequences. The intended audience the article is trying to hit is any workplace where multiple personalities are present. It does not have a specific job or workplace referenced in the article. I believe it was geared towards leaders or managers within an organizational. I do believe that the author’s arguments do support the main point she is trying to make in the articled. The article offers advice on dealing with difficult personalities. It states that there are 3 rules for dealing with difficult personalities. The first is not to take it personal. The next is that no matter what you do, you cannot change their behavior. The last the only person you can change is yourself. Some tactics for dealing with these people are assessing past incidents and determining what happened, how did it make me feel, and what could I do differently in the future to respond to the person I am dealing with. The article also offers advice on dealing with the aggressive difficult person. Dealing with these people you must be clear about how you wish to be treated and do not let them treat you any other way. Set the expectation up front or this group of people will take advantage of the situation when given the chance. The article talks about a few different personalities. The first is the timid mouse. These people never offer up ideas and avoids conflict at all cost. Tactics for dealing with this personality is holding them accountable and following up regularly with their performance. The next is the thumbs up, where they agree to anything but rarely deliver. Some tactics to deal with the thumbs upper is to establish clear goals and expectations for them to meet. The evil ruler is the next personality we will discuss. They are considered to be bullies or intimidators. They often let others do all the work like the sociopaths mentioned above. Tactics for dealing with evil rulers to either let them talk until they are out of steam or get up and walk away. Do not let them run the conversation or interrupt when someone is speaking. The last is the negative nelly. Negative Nellie’s are quick to point out why something won’t work and does not like change. Dealing with this personality requires to sticking to the facts and not allowing yourself to be sucked into the gossip. The evidence that supports the authors main point is how accurate the information being given in the article. I have used some of these tactics and dealt with the different form of personalities in the workplace. While they were called different name of personality, they all are the same. I have dealt with multiple people who have been either the timid mouse, negative nelly or the thumbs upper. My opinion of the article is a positive one. I enjoyed being reminded of the personalities we all have to deal with in the workplace. I also enjoyed the tactics that were referenced in the article because I have seen and used some of them but there were new ones that I will use in my professional career. My evidence to support my opinion can be found
