I believe that in order to enhance you career you must first start with developing your career goals. Without goals there is no purpose behind enhancing your career. Don’t wait to be asked “What are your goals.” No one is going to give you goals or care if you do not have them. The next action when developing career goals is to make the goals actionable, measurable, and achievable. These steps work hand in hand with one another and should not be done without the other. If a goal is not actionable then it is just writing on paper. When a goal is actionable then we can measure the good and bad. By measuring we use a metric that can demonstrate success or adjust when needed to ensure we make it to the last step of achieving. If the goal set is not achievable then we will give up and lose sight of our career goal. Ensure all your career goals are realistic. The idea if a goal is to be able to visualize the completion. The last strategy is finding a mentor. A mentor is important because this a person that has been where you are and can show you the path to reaching your career goals. When choosing a mentor, they must be able to tell you your strengths but also not be afraid to tell you your weaknesses. My second strategy for developing career goals is being passionate about and proud of your work. They say if a person loves his job, he doesn’t work a day in his life. I believe this quote. As a safety professional you have to love your career and the people you work to keep safe. Passion is rewarding and makes us enthusiastic and happy about our work. I tripped into the safety profession. I found myself with an opportunity to be the one who made the rules rather breaking them. Passion sometimes allows us to suffer through the difficulties that transcends our self-interest because we believe in the work we are doing and know the results and outcomes we want are right around the corner. It is important to find the right environment and work that is meaningful. When you are passionate or proud of the work you are doing, that is all the reward one needs. I believe the last strategy is my most important in career development. Continuous growth through learning and personal development is needed in order to stay up on relevant information that may affect your career choice. The learning and development come from you desire or passion for your career. Whether you are taking continuous learning classes or be recertified to keep training certifications up to date, we are learning. I try and learn something new every day, it expands my mind and the experiences I have. This may not help me every day but when it is needed, I can pull from my experiences and use the information to make an informed decision. If we are continuously learning, we never miss new guidelines or rules that could affect our team. As a leader and individual, if we are not learning we are dying. This class has opened my mind to new ways of dealing with employees from a leadership standpoint. I have become refocused on not just taking care of the company but also taking care of my employees and myself. I will continue to take action when it comes to my
