Sienna Coronaramos he AJ 10 Research Paper TIMOTHY LEARY The topic I have been given is about Timothy Leary. I was given this topic by my teacher due to the fact I had trouble picking just one topic. His full name is Timothy Francis Leary and he was born October 22, 1920 in Springfield, MA. He died on May 31,1996 in Southern California. Leary had about four wives in his lifetime. His first wife was Marianne and she died but she committed suicide. The second wife was Nena von Schlebrugge, third wife is Rosemary Sarah Woodruff, and Barbara Chase was Leary’s last wife.Timothy Leary had three children one girl, Susan, and two boys, Jack and Zachary. Susan killed her boyfriend and committed suicide in jail by hanging herself. He went to a few colleges during his life showing he was very educated. The first two colleges he went to were Holy Cross College, and West Point. Leary also went to University of Alabama, Washington State University, and the University of California Berkeley. Along with being the author of 30 books and around 400 essays. Although, he was a big supporter on the use of drugs; these drugs included mushrooms but mainly involving the use of LSD. Along with being an American Psychologists he was considered a counterculture guru. Through his advoavacy of use of drugs he gained many followers through the sixties and seventies. Leaving many parents to being angry with him because what he encouraged others to follow. Richard Nixon considered him to be “The most dangerous man in the world”. That is how the U.S Supreme Court Case Leary vs. United States came into play for the year 1969.This case involves the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 and the fifth amendment of the constitution. All this started when Leary took his girlfriend and his two children to Mexico to stay for an extended period of time so he could write a book. When returning to the United States marijuana was found in Leary’s daughter underwear. The story given was that the family crossed into Nuevo Laredo, Mexico and found out they needed to wait until the next morning to receive the appropriate visa for the extended stay. His family then decided to cross back into Texas to spend the night there, but his girlfriend Rosemary remembered she had marijuana in her possession. There was no way to throw it off the bridge so his daughter susan decided to put it in her underwear. At an American secondary inspection the inspector saw what seemed to be marijuana seed. The inspector was given permission to search the car and found there was possession of marihuana in the car. Leaving Leary to be tried on three counts when he took responsibility for the possession of the controlled substance marijuana. Leary was convicted of the Marihuana Tax Act on March 11, 1966, with a sentence of 30 years, had to pay 30,000, and the ordered to have psychiatric treatment. It was illegal to have marijuana in the state of Texas during this time. Leary appealed on the case is was unconstitutional for him to be arrested for the possession of marijuana because of the fifth amendment.
