Team members and leadership alike, will have questions about how to solve problems. Collaboration is necessary to foster a culture of resolution for conflicts. The following case study will discuss the importance of organizational missions, roles within an organization, competition, and the importance of goals, in regard to conflicts, based on the article “Case One: ElectriGov (Dyer, et. al, 2013. p. 177)”. Importance of an Organizational Mission In the case of ElectriGov, their mission is to provide electricity to various United States locations (Dyer, et. al, 2013. p. 177). It is critical for an organization to have a mission, so the scope of the organization is clear, to all stakeholders. Without a clear mission, this would leave room for conflicts pertaining to differing opinions on what is within the scope of an organization’s role, and what kind of products or services the organization is designed to provide. ElectiGov has a clear mission, and to achieve that mission, there are clearly defined teams with roles assigned. Importance of Roles To meet ElectriGov’s mission of providing electricity, the organization has three crews, consisting of five to ten men each. Their job is to install power lines. Each of these three teams is led by one foreman. Most of the time, these teams will work independently, however, larger projects require teams to work together. Roles are critical, to establish who should be doing what, and who is in charge. Without clearly-defined roles, there may be too many metaphorical chefs stirring the pot, and not enough sous chefs, preparing the ingredients, to achieve the goal, lending to the success of the mission. In the case of Electrigov, if there were no established foreman for each team, then there would be conflicts among each crew, due to differing opinions on how things should be done, to complete the installation of the power lines. Conversely, if there were all foreman-minded men, and no teammates doing the actual installation. Without defined roles, the team would not be very productive. Is Competition within a Team Good or Bad? Conflict, for the betterment of the team, or organization, can be a great thing. Pertaining to the line crews at ElectriGov, competition has proved to be a bad thing. This is because of the spirit of the competition. Rather than collaborating, each team’s desire to be better than the next, competition, of a poor sort, resulted. This resulted in a safety breach with hot wires, which potentially, put lives at risk. Importance of Short-Term and Long-Term Goals in Regard to Conflicts Without both short, and long-term, goals, conflict can be anticipated. This is because there is no forward momentum, and members of the group will become conflicted with no real direction. Long-term goals establish what is hoping to be accomplished over a longer period of time. Since long-term goals take quite some time to achieve (for example, if ElectriGov were to set a long-term goal of expanding their electrical network across a specific state), then
