Creativity management increases organizational creativity and enhances innovation through management practices that integrate individual skill, leadership orientation, and cultural symbolism. This allows continuous growth of creative action through the creativity spiral. The development of an organization that breeds creativity starts with two main ideas. The first is the manageable side of the organization, made up of the employees, rules and procedures. The second is the interpersonal relationship side, these are the interactions and the three elements we will discuss in this paper, professional, leadership, and culture. All three of these of element are required to work together in order to create a culture of creativity and innovation within your organization. The first element is professionals, these are the employees or teammates that have the skills to generate the ideas. Their ideas lead to innovation and the out of box thinking. These people are vital if the organizational wants to promote creative thinking. When I first started working for Scope, the rush I would get when we all got together to brainstorm ideas for changing the way we do things or the flexibility I was given to create a training program that was more than just words. It gave me a reason to get up and try harder and work longer. When employees are given the ability to be creative it brings new ideas and process’ that benefit the organization for years. I used to preach that the employees are the ones who make the trains run, without them you have leaders who have no one to keep it on time and an organization out of business. The second element is leadership. Without leadership there can be no structure or chaos ensues. When leadership is present and effective it leads it can foster ideas and help guide those ideas toward the goal at hand. Leaders are there to ensure everyones ideas are voiced and heard. They settle conflict and set expectations. A failure leadership can lead to resentment and missing goals. While I worked at Scope, we never had an environment where our leadership fostered creativity. They had run the business their way for years and were unwilling to change. They never appreciated we were adapting to the climate around us. They felt their ideas were the only ideas that mattered. This led to a lot of great people resigning or projects failing because they were not given the creativity to come up with ideas that would make project safer, run smoother and make more profit. When professionals and leadership are on the same page it is the culture that follows to create a creative and innovative organization. Creative culture influences individuals and creative leadership. Existing culture in an organization can dictate whether you stand a chance at creating the culture you want. If an organization has a strong culture for creativity or is supportive to their employees and managers, creativity and innovation can thrive. But, when the flexibility is nonexistent, employees become stagnant and unhappy with their positions. Many employees want to make their job easier or more efficient. This was the demise of Scope; the organization was stagnant and didn’t want to evolve to change. They were known for treating their employees as numbers and not assets. This led to a lot of the problems stated previously. It did however teach me a lot about the way I work as a leader and the type of company I will work for. I choose to work for a company that values their employees. Money is nice but being made to feel appreciative for your work is important.
