Motion: I believe that abortion is right Abortion rights are some of the most hotly contested issued in our society. In my case, I firmly believe that abortion is right. Being a mother should be a choice, not a duty. It is a basic human right to have a reproductive freedom. I would never force someone to be pregnant who didnāt want to be pregnant in the first place. Conception can happen in many different ways. Through abuse, rape and all of these can cause trauma to the woman if she decides to continue the pregnancy. Pregnancy can be traumatic. A womanās body belongs to her. It is not a political playground and it is not a place for legislation. Thatās their body, thatās their future. Women are just endangering themselves getting abortion in places that are sketchy, so at least with pro-choice we could regulate it, we can make safer options for women. Unsafe abortion carries significant risks for women. In the Philippines, according to Philippine Statistics Authority about 1,000 women die each year from abortion complications, which contributes to the nationās high maternal mortality ratio. Tens of thousands of women are hospitalized each year for complications from unsafe abortion. Poor women, rural women and young women are particularly likely to experience unintended pregnancy and to seek abortion under unsafe conditions. Because of the risks of unsafe abortion, many women need postabortion care, but they face barriers in obtaining such care, including the stigma around abortion and the high cost of medical care. In addition, seventy percent of unwanted pregnancies in the Philippines end in abortion, according to the WHO. Approximately 4 in 5 abortions in the Philippines are for economic reasons, often where a woman already has several children and cannot care for another. When people fight to see abortion become illegal but they donāt fight to see reformation in the adoption, foster care and healthcare system, they are not really fighting for life. They are not fighting for life and they are not fighting for these mothers. They are merely sticking to this old argument of morality. Most pro-life people donāt even care about the life of the kid after theyāre born. There are many mothers out there that believe their kid would actually be better off dead than be alive in a system that fails them every day. If they are only pro-life for a clump of cells, they should go beyond that because it cost people everything to lay down their very lives once they make that decision to take care of that child in a system that continues to fail them. They canāt just talk the talk; they need to walk the walk. If theyāre going to fight for life, they should also be available to take care of that life. Another common argument for pro-life is that itās a life at conception, so letās just assume that thatās true but we all know that the fetus needs to use the motherās body for the next nine months. It is also known in our society that rape is bad and it is one of the worst thing that someone could do to somebody. What rape essentially is, is the using of someoneās body against their will, without their consent. So, if pro-life says that itās a life at conception but they also say
