Name: Parthenon, which comes from the greek word parthenos or “virgin”(2) Location: Athens, Greece Key Dates: 447 - 432 BC Architects: Iktinos and Kalli- krates.(1) Function: Served as the most im- portant temple of ancient Greek religion, ment for the goddess Athena. It was later converted to a Christian church.(2) Key Dimensions: The east and west sides of the temple were about 30.9 meters long, and the north and south sides were 69.5 meters in length. The columns were over 10 meters tall.(3) Materials: Pentelic marble for the columns, limestone for the foun- dation, and gold and ivory for the statue of Athena.(3) Important Features: The tem- ple’s main function was to house the statue of Athena, which was kept in the naos room. Athena’s treasure was kept in the back room.(3) Structural System: The Parthe- non is of Doric order. The temple had 8 columns going across the front and back and 17 going down the sides. This established the ratio of 9:4.(3) Symbolism: The exterior rep- resented stories of Greek my- thology. The eastern pediment showed the birth of Athena and the western illustrated Athena’s battle with Poseidon for posses- sion of the land of Attica.(4) Perspective Section Plan
