Dr. Larry Dossey distinguished three separate eras of medicine through these changes. The first two of these being Era I and Era II. Era I came about in the 1860s when “science was incorporated into medical practice” (Koerner, 2011). Known as the Mechanical model, Era I considered health, wellness, and consciousness to be entirely mechanical and body- based entities, based off of the physical brain and its functions. Era II took place in the 1950s when a mind-body relationship idea was developed. The Body/Mind model of Era II added to the strict mechanical concept of Era I by including the human mind’s influences on the body. Attitude, emotions, beliefs, and thoughts would affect the body’s physical well-being (Riley, 2011). Era II integrated the functions of the human mind and body as a “local” experience within one body (Koerner, 2011). Although the Bodymodel of Era Iso importantly highlights the physical nature of health, I do believe that the human mind plays a major role in health and wellness. Era II incorporates the mind and acknowledges the influence it has on the body’s physical healing. A poor attitude, negative thoughts, and disbeliefs will hinder the body’s ability to heal. I agree with the concept of Era II’s Body/Mind model and how important the body and mind feed off of one another’s energy and structures. While caring for patients, nurses must recognize how their personal beliefs and opinions can be visible to patients and affect the care received. It is evident that not all humans have the same values and will not agree on everything. While nurses are human and have a right to their values and beliefs, it is important that they are aware of their personal values and do not allow 5 PROFESSIONAL PRESENCE AND INFLUENCE practical and cynical, getting easily bored, and not planning for the future. ISFP’s enjoy hobbies and activities that utilize physical and artistic skills such as skiing, swimming, dance, and crafts. The personality type enjoys intimate groups and exploring nature and art(“ISFP in Depth - All About the ISFP Personality Type”, n.d.). In their careers, ISFP’s like to be personally engaged and prefer to be able to express themselves in their work or believe in the cause, usually seeking out a quiet, supportive work environment where they can keep a low profile and are not required to lead or speak publicly. “ISFP in Depth - All About the ISFP Personality Type” (n.d.) lists some of the top ISFP careers asfashion/interior designer, chef, graphic designer, nurse, dental hygienist, physical therapist, physician assistant, pharmacist, police officer, and social worker. In analyzingISFP’s relationships with others, ISFP’s, although initially reserved around those unfamiliar, get along with most other personality types and are gentle, friendly, and loyal to those who they most care about (“ISFP in Depth - All About the ISFP Personality Type”, n.d.). I agree that the majority of the ISFP traits align with who and how I am as a person. Some of the significant ISFP characteristics that I recognize within myself are being observant, very principled, quiet, enjoying my alone time, going with the flow, and my loyalty to those close to me. Listed as one of the top ISFP careers, my work as a registered nurse allows me to help other people with good purpose. I enjoy hanging out with my few close friends in an intimate setting, love to spend time outdoors, and am always up for an adventure. Although I recognize numerous similarities between myself and the ISFP personality type; I am not a complete “cookie-cutter” ISFP. ISFP’s are known to not plan or consider the future until it has arrived. I, on the other hand, enjoy planning ahead while considering my options and how my current choices will playout and affect my life long-term. I also do not necessarily fit into the “artistic” 6 PROFESSIONAL PRESENCE AND INFLUENCE component of an ISFP. I would not describe myself as one to be very creative and musical like a typical ISFP is portrayed. The indecisiveness and unpredictabilityof ISFP’s can often be a barrier in planning for the future and preparing for what is to come. ISFP’s tend to just go with the flow instead of having a strong perspective and opinion on topics. Making plans for the future by setting goals or picturing where they want to be in the next ten years will also help the ISFP assume more responsibility without giving up their creativity and spontaneity. Their “easygoing” personalitymeans it would also be out of the ISFP’s comfort zone to become a leader and would have a hard time communicating with others due to avoidance of conflict and not always saying what they think or feel. When working with more bold personality types, ISFP’s may be overshadowed or often go unheard. As an ISFP, self-awareness of their want to avoid confrontation and possessing motivation in a cause may help the individual to speak up for themselves and present their ideas to others(“ISFP in Depth - All About the ISFP Personality Type”, n.d.). Mindfulness Practice According to The New Oxford American Dictionary Third Edition (2010)mindfulness is defined as “a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique”. A mindfulness practice plan for the whole person consists of four different body aspects: physical, vital/rhythmic, mental/emotional, and biographical/spiritual. A mindful practice plan for myselfwould look like this (Complete Health & Healing, n.d.): Physical – As a nurse, I am on my feet for long twelve-hour shifts, but I would like to be getting regular exercise to meet my body’s physical needs. I currently am working out one to two 7 PROFESSIONAL PRESENCE AND INFLUENCE times a week, a goal of mine is to go to the gymthree to four times each week for weightliftingand cardio. Another physical goal would be focusing on what I put into my body. Consuming healthy, nutrient-rich foods would physically energize me. To achieve my physical health goals, I will build 45-minute time periods into my schedule three times a week for me to go to the gym so that I have settimes to focus on my physical health and wellbeing.I also will eat less processed foods and make a conscious effort to not eat fast food on my way to work or when out with friends. This means I will buy more fresh produce at the store and eat more meals at home in order to control my physical health. Vital/Rhythmic – I currently spend a lot of my downtimestaring at a screen; whether it be my phone, laptop, or television. In order to improve the vital rhythm in my life I have set a goal to cut back on my screen timeto allow my mind to relax and destress. To do this, I will spend fifteen minutes each day outside with nature instead of staring at my phone or worrying about what everyone else is doing on social media.Another goal I feel would benefit the vital rhythm aspect of my life is attending yoga sessions to help my energy and allow me uninterrupted time to revitalize my body and mind. Twice a week, on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s I plan to attend the yoga class at the gym to help focus on my clarity and connecting to my natural rhythms. Mental/Emotional –To help my mental/emotionalneeds, my goal is to listen to music and communicate with those close to me. I have noticed when I find myself emotionally frustrated or overwhelmed, listening to Christian music helps to soothe and relax my heart and mind. Each evening while I am in the shower or bathroom getting ready for bed, I will listen to Christian music and unwind my mind. This time will allow me to reflect on my day and focus my heart and mind on the calming message of the music.I also know that discussing my frustrations and concerns with someone who I am close to such as my mom, boyfriend, or sisterallows me to 10 PROFESSIONAL PRESENCE AND INFLUENCE environment is experienced through positive relationships formed and the interactive care from clinicians to housekeepers. A personal experience is created and allows patients and family members access and the ability to make decisions in their care. The behavioral aspect of Sharp Memorialincludes its partnering with programs in the community to provide access to good nutrition and promote healthy lifestyles. Pet therapy, volunteer baking, spiritual care services, andhealing human touch therapies(massage, aromatherapy, and acupuncture) are also available to patients. As part of the external environment, calming music, art and nature are incorporated into the facility to decrease stress and enable healing. This holistic approach optimizes healing in all areas: mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical(Patient-Centered Care at Sharp, n.d.). Recognizing the value and impact of this healthcare environment healing approach, I plan to bring this into my practice at my current healthcare facility, Medical City Plano. I work the night shift and I realize the importance of quietness to healing and recovery. I will start to be more aware and take control of the noise levels made in the hallways or at the nurse’s station, recognizing what is too loud and inhibits patient healing. I also will start taking advantage of the Healing Garden that my facility offers, encouraging patients and family members to spend time in nature to reflect.Additionally, I will start being more cognizant of the atmosphere of patient rooms. Spare clean linens, wipes, gowns, or medical supplies are often left scattered around patients’ rooms. I will be sure to leave my patients’ rooms looking neat and clean for anoptimal calming environment.Incorporatingeach of these actions into my work will help promote professional presence and wholeness in healing while creating an optimal healing environment for patients. 11 PROFESSIONAL PRESENCE AND INFLUENCE References Complete Health & Healing.
