With many adults leaving home for college or a night on the town, danger is always waiting around the corner. Due to the lack of time in their schedule and/or knowledge, nine out of ten adults and young adults will choose fun over health and safety. Only if there was a way to choose both – kickboxing. Originating in Japan in the late 1950’s, kickboxing is a combination of Karate, Muay Thai and western boxing that was brought to prominence in the U.S.A in 1974. After a period of high, kickboxing vanished from popular notice. The sport was brought back to notoriety and cardio kickboxing became a fitness and self-defense craze in 1993. Kickboxing is a great hobby because it aids in weight loss and teaches self-defense. The obesity rate among American adults at the end of 2018 was 31.3 %. One of the leading causing of obesity is lack of physical activity. The Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults get at least 75 minuets of vigorous or 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week. Strength training for every major muscle group should be done twice a week (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2019). Kickboxing offers simultaneous resistance training, cardiovascular exercise and will work every muscle and bone in your body. It not only improves flexibility but also keeps one focused. In as little as 30 min a day, one can burn up to 1,000 calories, enhance cardiovascular health, and improve total body strength.
