C717 Business Ethics Task 1: Organizational Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility Western Governors University A. Corporate Policies As the human resources director of TechFite, I would quickly create the following three corporate policies. 1. An executive and employee bonus policy. Getting rid of the excessive bonuses being paid to top executives. 2. An hourly and benefit policy for employees. Giving full time hours and benefits back to employees. 3. A policy regarding the TechFite commitment to the community and helping to rebuild the city being environmentally responsible. A1. Rationale Taking away the excessive bonuses to top executives will help with the budget problems TechFite is facing. This policy will help improve the culture of the workplace. It will show employees that TechFite truly cares and wants them engaged in decision making. This policy would be an all employee bonus policy. It would give employees a year end bonus if TechFite meets financial and team targets. TechFite wants to reward its employees since they all contribute to the success of the company. This policy will help TechFite build an outstanding reputation and will be a great place to work. Giving employees full time hours and benefits will help them thrive at work. This policy will help restore TechFite’s reputation among employees and it will promote a great place to work among the community. TechFite needs employees who are going to work hard and meet goals. Employees that are happy will do just that and more. TechFite will have employees with years of service and a low turn over rate. This is financially beneficial for TechFite. It also promotes a great place to work. It shows employees and the community that TechFite is a trustworthy company which helps to develop a strong presence. It is extremely important for TechFite to have the community support and involvement. To be a strong presence with a great reputation is good for the community. This policy will ensure that TechFite will honor its commitments made to the community which will help build the strong presence and great reputation. By sponsoring community events and supporting local youth leadership development programs, TechFite is improving their corporate culture and being socially involved. It is also important to TechFite and the community to be environmentally cautious. The policy will ensure that TechFite will be a leader and will invest in programs that will aid in the rebuilding of the city and the future. TechFite will start by investing and helping to create a recycling program that will benefit the community. A2. Ethical Versus Legal Issues Legal issues are based upon written laws created by government. It is mandatory to obey these laws or individuals can be punished accordingly. The law is a set of rules that controls what people can and cannot do. Ethical issues are based on individual’s belief on what is right or wrong. This comes from the individual’s personal opinions and moral standards. It is voluntary to follow ethical standards and individuals are not often punished. Ethical standards are codes of conduct that can help individuals get through difficult situations. Issues that are legal can be unethical. For example, reducing hours for employees so that you do not have to pay for benefits is legal however it can be perceived as unethical. Issues that are ethical can a great place to work would give TechFite an competitive advantage. It would improve the reputation by attracting employees who want to work and are happy with their job. TechFite would gain recognition from customers, employees, competitors, and the community. Being a strong presence that is good for the community would make TechFite a leader. It would build respect and trust for the company from the community. TechFite would also gain support from the stakeholders. These things would improve the reputation drastically and will make TechFite a great place to work and that strong presence in the community that the company values and is seeking. Three examples of what TechFite has done or failed to do that has harmed its image are cutting hours and benefits from employees, paying top executives’ excessive bonuses, and not fulfilling commitments that were made to the community. Cutting hours and benefits from employees causes to complain and not be happy with their jobs. Paying top executives excessive bonuses contributes to the financial problems. It also causes distrust between employees and executives because the hours and benefits were cut due to the budget. TechFite failed to honor commitments to the community to sponsor community events, support local youth leadership development programs, and invest in infrastructure utilizing environmentally responsible techniques. B2. Course of Action TechFite needs to take action to resolve the following issues going on in the company that are affecting the company culture and core values. The first course of action is to reinstate full time hours and benefits for all employees. This will help TechFite retain good employees and will help build the reputation TechFite is seeking. The second course of action is to cancel remove all bonuses being given to the top executives. This will extremely help the budget issues and start to build trust. Once the company is thriving financially and goals are being met it can reward all employees with a yearly bonus. The third course of action is to start honoring the commitments made to the community right away. The community needs to see action so that TechFite can earn trust from the community. TechFite is going to start sponsoring community events, support local leadership development programs, and invest in infrastructure to aid in rebuilding the city. TechFite will also lead in helping the community come up with a recycling program that will help the environment. All these actions will improve the reputation of TechFite. They will also make TechFite a great place to work and a strong presence that is good for the community. B3. Course of Action: Explanation The course of action that reinstates full time hours and benefits to all employees is an ethical responsibility. It is an ethical responsibility because it will build trusting partnerships and teamwork. It also helps provide a positive workplace and livelihood for the employees. Most of all it boosts morale and is just the right thing to do. Great employees are the backbone for TechFite. Removing large bonuses from top executives is an ethical responsibility. It is an ethical responsibility because TechFite needs a profit to exist and thrive. Removing the bonuses will help with the budget issues. Providing yearly bonuses to all employees if financial and team goals have been met will provide a positive and trusting working environment that employees will thrive in. TechFite is going to sponsor community events and support local leadership development which are social responsibilities. They are social responsibilities because TechFite is giving back and investing time and effort to help the community flourish. This will help TechFite and the community build trust and feel connected. TechFite is investing in infrastructure to aid in the rebuilding of the city. They are also being a leader in a recycling program for managing waste. These are environmental responsibilities because TechFite is working to protect and keep the environment green by using natural resources wisely.
