1, (15 pts) Two nonconducting hoops of radius 2.0 m are lying in planes parallel to one
another and with the central axes of the hoops coinciding, as shown here. The hoop
on the left has a charge of -6.0 jC uniformly distributed around it, and the hoop on
the right has 3.0 UC uniformly distributed around it. Find the work needed to move a
point charge of +4.0 iC from point P, to point P,. (Hint: Calculate the potential at
each of the two points.)
2. (10 pts) A current-carrying wire is in a 1.5 T magnetic
field as shown here. The field exerts a force of 0.40 N
inward perpendicular to the page on a 3.0 m section of
the wire. The wire has a circular cross-section with a
radius of 2.0 cm. There are 8.5 x 10" conduction
electrons/m*. (a) Find the magnitude and direction of the
current in the wire. (b) What is the magnitude and
direction of the drift velocity of the electrons?
3. (10 pts) In the circuit shown, all the resistors
{except the internal resistance of the battery}
have the same resistance 8. When the switch is
open, the voltmeter reads 8.0 V and the ammeter
teads 2.0 A. (a) What is the emf of the battery?
(b) What is the value of R? (c) What will the
voltmeter and ammeter read when the switch is
closed?
4. (15 pts) (a) In the circuit shown, find the
equivalent capacitance of all of the
capacitors. (b) Find the total energy
stored in capacitors C,, C,, and C,
combined.
