Lab Exercise 08 – Cartographic Overlay Introduction After last week’s lab, everyone should be very comfortable using ArcGIS to perform attribute and spatial queries. This week’s lab builds upon the concept of the spatial query to introduce a richer set of analytical tools for spatial analysis. The type of analysis is called map overlay or cartographic overlay and is a fundamental component of vector GIS analysis. From a practical standpoint within ArcGIS, the map overlay process is often done through a combination of Geoprocessing steps and attribute and spatial queries. Compared to earlier GIS packages, ArcGIS provides a rich set and relatively easy to use set of tools to perform cartographic overlay. Like last week, the information you use in this week’s lab you will continue to use regularly in your GIS career, or at least through this course. Part I – Mastering ArcGIS The material we will cover in this in Chapter 7 – Geoprocessing in Mastering ArcGIS. Taken together these tools are presented in ArcGIS through the ArcToolbox. While these concepts are not overly difficult, and the tutorial should not be too time-consuming, you should become proficient in using them. The tutorial walks you through many of the Geoprocessing Tools and you should take the time to become familiar with each of them as you will use them throughout your GIS career. Part II – Graded Assignment 1) You will be graded on how well you fill in the blanks in the Mastering the Skills section. GEOG 660 students will not be responsible for completing this. 2) The core of this labs graded assignment builds on the spatial and attribute queries you performed last week by using spatial queries. ArcGIS has a very good set of tools to perform this, and they are presented in a much more approachable form than pervious GIS packages. Use them to your advantage. Your assignment, should you choose to undertake it, is presented in the attached memo. Docsity.com TO: GIS Technician 2nd class RE: New Home for Aggieland Geomatics in College Station Thanks to your efforts and those of your colleagues Aggieland Geomatics has been doing very well and our growing business needs a new home in College Station. I need your help determine what potential properties we may be able to purchase for our new home. Successful completion of the project will require construction of a map and generation of a report listing all properties in the City of College Station that meet the following criteria a. The selected parcel will have an assessed value less than $1,000,000, and b. has an area of 1 to 2 acres, and c. is not located in either the 100 or 500 year floodplain, and d. is located within 2.5 miles of the Memorial Student Center (MSC) on the Texas A&M campus, and e. is zoned for commercial use, and f. is NOT located immediately adjacent to one of the following road types a. Major arterial b. Minor arterial c. Major collector d. Minor collector Because the map will be shown to all Aggieland Geomatics employees, you should produce a nice map. Cartographically, I would like you to employ some technique to highlight the parcels and roads within the area within 2.5 miles of the campus relative to those falling outside of it. I think there may be a way to accomplish this using the Analysis Tools in ArcGIS. In the generated report, I would like the following information about each parcel sorted in ascending order based on its value: a. Its legal description b. Its owner c. Its value d. Its area Good Luck! Docsity.com
