As I go through the phases of moral development from childhood to adulthood, I learned that my behavior was influenced by social interactions and by the rules imposed in my community wherein we conform with what is morally acceptable by the majority. These established moral standards were based as well on the influences of the culture that is constantly evolving through time in a certain society. How does culture help in generating the character and identity of its people? Explain and cite some examples. Culture, as a way of living, helps in generating character and identity through the passing, embarking, and development of admirable moral values through social learning. Hospitality (being accommodating to anybody), hiya (being conscious of what others see on you), “utang na loob” (being responsible in returning favors), “pakikisama” (being good at maintaining relations), and respect for elders (being obedient and courteous) are some of the remarkable Filipino moral characters that help us choose necessary actions on a certain situation. These are derived from universal human values like love, happiness, freedom, equality, and justice to uphold harmonious relationships with other people that are applicable regardless of the societies’ generation.
