Distinguish between Overlapping and Cross-cutting Overlapping Cross-Cutting Under this, one social difference overlaps with other differences Under this one social difference cross cuts another difference. People start feeling that they belong to different communities. Under this groups that share a common interest on one issue are likely to be in different side on a different issue. These lead to the possibilities of deep social divisions and portions. These are easier to accommodate. For example The difference between the blacks and whites becomes a social division in the US because the blocks tend to be poor, homeless and discriminated. In the Netherlands, class and religion tend to cut cross each other. Catholics and Protestants are about equally likely to be poor or rich. 2. Explain the Civil Rights Movement in the USA. i. Civil Rights Movement in the USA (1954-1968) refers to a set of events and reform movements aimed at abolishing legal racial discrimination against African โ€“ Americans. ii. This movement was led by Martin Luther King Jr. It practiced non violent methods of civil disobedience against racially discriminatory laws and practices. iii. This movement inspired many nationalists to raise the issue of social discrimination at international level. 3. Most of the social differences are based on accident of birth. Explain i. Social differences are mostly based on accident of birth. ii. Normally we donโ€™t choose to belong to our community. iii. We belong to it simply because we were born into it.
