Paramio MDL STEM 11-¢ Robert Hooke (1665) + An English Scientist that examined a thin slice of cork under the microscope. He observed that the piece of cork was composed of many compartments which resembled little rooms with surrounding wall. Hooke named these compartments cells. The cells that Hooke observed were not living. He concentrated his study only on the structure, particularly on the cell wall, and did not pursue his investigation of the cell content. Robert Brown (1 ) HECELL THEORY STORICAL TIMELINE + A Scottish Bota: = + He discovered the meee and theorized that this structure is a fundamental and a constant component of the cell. Theodor Schwann (1839) + A German Zoologist + He discovered that animals were made of cells. Robert Remak (1855) + He stated that cell only comes from pre-existing cells. + Discoved cell division under the microscope. Hans and Zacharias Janssen (1590) + The Dutch father and son + They invented the first compound microscope. Anton Van Leeuwenhoek (1674) + The Dutch Inventor built a simple microscope with only one lens to observe red blood cells, sperms and a myriad of single-celled organisms in pond water. He discovered free cells and observed the nucleus within some red blood cells. Matthias Schleiden (1838) + He discovered the plants were made up of the cells. + Credited for developing the first two tenets of the cell theory. Rudolph Virchow (1855) + He is knownas “the father of modern pathology” + Virchow used the theory that all cells arise from pre-existing cells to lay the groundwork for cellular pathology, or the study of disease at the cellular level. His work made it more clear that diseases occur at the cellular level. Questions: 1. What theory did the scientist provide evidence for? + They provided evidence for the cell theory. Cell theory states that living things are composed of one or more cells, that the cell is the basic unit of life, and that cells arise from existing cells. 2. What instrument was necessary before the cell theory could be developed? + The invention of the microscope led to the discovery of the cell by Hooke. While looking at cork, Hooke observed box-shaped structures, which he called “cells” as they reminded him of the cells, or rooms, in monasteries. This discovery led to the development of the classical cell theory. 3. Which three scientists directly contributed evidence for the cell theory? + Credit for developing cell theory is usually given to the scientists: Theodor Schwann, Matthias Jacob Schleiden, and Rudolf Virchow. In 1839, Schwann and Schleiden suggested that cells were the basic unit of life. THEODOR SCHWANN MATTHIAS JACOB SCHLEIDEN RUDOLPH VIRCHOW
