Social structure gives order & predictability to social life. Social structure helps us see how we fit in a group. SOCIAL STRUCTURE= the pattern of social relationships within a group Status  Status- a position a person holds within a social structure; these determine your “place” in groups and society. Two types: ASCRIBED and ACHIEVED What are some of YOUR statuses? How does your status affect how you feel about yourself? TYPES OF STATUSES ASCRIBED STATUS ACHIEVED STATUS  A position in social structure that is neither earned nor chosen but ASSIGNED ◦ Gender ◦ Ethnicity ◦ Age  A position in social structure that is earned or chosen. ◦ Profession/Occupation ◦ Relationship status ◦ Hobbies Master Statuses can be ACHIEVED or ASCRIBED Ascribed Statuses that are “Master Statuses” Achieved Statuses that are “Master Statuses”  Gender  Ethnicity  Age  Race  Disability from birth  These are all master statuses because they significantly impact likelihood of achieving other social statuses  Your occupation ◦ Influences where you live, how well you live, how long you live  Criminals  Disability that occurs later in life- can be life-altering What would most likely determine someone’s master status in the United States? REVIEW ACTIVITY Title: Ascribed/achieved review List 5 achieved statuses you hold. List 5 ascribed statuses you hold. Role- an expected behavior associated with a particular status, including rights and obligations Roles (or behaviors) are based on the rights and obligations associated with statuses RIGHTS OBLIGATIONS  A behavior that individuals expect from others  EXAMPLES  Students: you have the RIGHT to come to school and teachers have a prepared lesson & know material  Teachers: we have the right to expect you will make effort  A behavior that individuals are expected to perform toward others  EXAMPLES  Teachers: we have an obligation to prepare lessons for you to learn from  Students: you have an obligation to make the effort to learn in school Take 2 notecard halves. On one half of your card write: My status is a ___________. On the other half write I do the following (list 3 roles): CAN BE REAL OR PRETEND. KEEP IT APPROPRIATE! Statuses and roles provide the basis for group life. When people are interacting with other people, they carry out the roles associated with their statuses. Two terms illustrate the above concept: ROLE PERFORMANCE and SOCIAL INTERACTION ROLE PERFORMANCE The actual conduct, or behavior, exhibited by people as they carry out a role  Can be in public or private  Most role performance involves social interaction SOCIAL INTERACTION  Any of the processes by which people influence one another as they interrelate WHAT ARE PROBLEMS THAT COME WITH TRYING TO JUGGLE A JOB & OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES? Discussion Role Conflict When the roles’ of two or more statuses conflict with one another (two statuses with conflicting roles) The roles of a teacher and a parent sometimes conflict. I want to get home and play with Liam and see my husband but I have papers to grade and after school meetings to attend. I want to go to my son’s school and visit but I have to work. Role Strain When one status has many roles and the person has trouble meeting all of them (one status, many roles) Being a parent is difficult. I have to discipline my child but listen and take care of him, play with him, teach him important life lessons, potty train him, provide for him and the list goes on and on and on…One status with MANY roles
