It’s guiding the client through stages of change to reach actualization and a healthy adaptive lifestyle. The video shows how MI is very beneficial in brief psychotherapy for patients with substance use disorder. The techniques and strategies on how to use MI are explained by Stephen Rollnick who can be described as one of the originators of MI. This emphasizes that there is potential for change and helps the client recognize that there needs to be a change. It helps the client develop and strengthen the motivation for change and to fully engage in their treatment plan toward recovery. He explains the importance relies on how the therapist creates an atmosphere of collaboration, acceptance, and compassion where the patients internalize and gets motivated to improve something. Key Take-Away Two: For this key takeaway, I want to talk about the theory Dr. Stephen Rollnick spoke about. He has some theories in place and the main component are technical and relational. The technical components are encompassing reframing and listening skills to go towards change talk. While reducing anything that involves conflict or argumentative speech sustaining talk. After listening responding to and reinforcing the client’s language that focuses on their desire, abilities, reasons, and need for positive change. This enhances the client’s motivation to strengthen their commitment and plan forward for that change. Another important technique to know about MI is OARS, which is open questions, affirmations, reflections, and summary statements. This technique keeps a positive flow, increases change talk, and resolves ambivalence toward change. The relational component is fundamental for establishing a strong therapeutic relationship. Where the therapist interacts in a client-centered way, nonjudgmental, and collaborative to convey support, respect, and advocacy. This is mainly to gain the trust of the client and guide them to that change. The relational components are using empathic response and unconditional positive regard to form a strong bond. Another component is creating a safe space where change can occur and where it’s easy to guide a conversation. Nonetheless, the two components are interchangeable to be proficient and facilitate change in the client. Key Take-Away Three: The third key takeaway is about the four processes in practice. Dr. Stephen Rollnick describes it as steps meaning working on one step before going to the next level. The first step is engaging which means establishing a strong therapeutic alliance with the client. In a way where the client can be heard, cared for, and supported. Ask an open question like what brings you in today or what would be the benefits of cutting back on your alcohol use? While actively listening to the client, reframing, and summarizing to guide the client toward recognition and reflection. The second level is focusing on what are the client’s concerns that require attention.
