Classroom Management Plan Statement of Purpose My classroom will be a space that maintains a student first attitude to maximize each student’s educational potential so they will succeed physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially. Students learn in different ways, and a variety of instructional approaches will be available to support their educational growth. Continuous improvements will be made so that all students will be provided educational experiences to succeed by building confidence, self-direction, and a lifelong love of learning. Rules Establishing rules of the classroom will begin on the first day of school. I will involve the students in making the rules as students should feel like they are part in making up the rules and not just being dictated to them. The students and I will engage in collaboration in making up the rules where they raise their hands and suggest certain rules which will be written on a white board. There will no doubt be numerous rules which most will be more than likely used as procedures. The students will be guided into the following rules: I will listen carefully and follow directions. I will be respectful of others feelings, space, and property. I will be responsible for my actions, words, and choices. I will be kind and treat others as I would like to be treated. It is best to keep the rules to a minimum, simple, and positive. By using “I” at the beginning of each rule, this will create a sense of ownership and accountability within the student. After the rules are established and agreed upon, I will have them printed out on poster board which can then be signed by each student as a behavioral contract. The poster will then be laminated and placed somewhere prominently in the classroom where it is highly visible and to serve as a reminder. The class and I will review the rules at the beginning of class for the first few weeks where I will be asking the students to raise their hand and provide an explanation of why each rule is important. Procedures Procedures and routines are crucial when dealing with elementary students as they are more comfortable in a predictable and structured environment. Instruction of the procedures will also begin on the first day of the school year and will be addressed daily for four to six weeks at the beginning of the year which will save time in future instruction. There will be a set of standard procedures, but these will also be flexible and modified for unforeseen challenges that may arise during the school year. Fire/Tornado/Lockdown – will be adhered to and practiced according to school policy. Lunch sign up - Students will be shown on the first day the lunch signup sheet that will be next to the door and will be signed by the student upon entry into the class. The lunch signup sheet will have two or three columns listed depending on how many choices the cafeteria has available that day. Students will be instructed to sign in the column for students who pack their lunch or to sign in the appropriate column for the lunch they will chose to buy that day. I will check while they are doing their morning work to insure each student has signed. The “stand up/sit down” procedure will be done to see who hasn’t signed up. As I call out student’s names they will stand up indicating that they have signed the lunch signup sheet. If the number of students standing does during instruction unless it is an emergency. There will be a “sign out/sign in” sheet next to the classroom door where the student will fill in their name, the time they left for restroom, and the time they return to class. Student attention - Students will be taught that when I say “Class, class, class!” they will respond with “Yes, yes, yes!” indicating their immediate attention is needed for important information. It will be brought to the students’ attention as a group or individually if there is excessive noise or they are engaging in off task behavior. A “silent stare” will also be used to regain control and focus of the students when necessary. Answering questions/wanting to be addressed - Students will be instructed that they must raise their hands and wait to be called on. The student will not be acknowledged if they do not raise their hand or be called out for not raising their hand to answer a question. If the student is raising their hand to get attention or being the “helpless handraiser”, I will state that “I’m not available” or “Think through it.” This will promote executive function and create student awareness of their actions and what they need to do differently. Transitions – Students will be assigned a number at the beginning of the year correlating to their name listed on the student roster. Lining up for activity transitions, returning classroom items such as offices, homework, laptops, etc. will be done by either calling out student name or number. It will be emphasized that transitions will be done quietly and orderly especially if in hallways so as not to disrupt other classes. Technology - Cell phone use will be prohibited by students in class. Students will be able to work on laptops provided by the school for projects or specified educational websites. Accommodations will be made for students with or without special needs for specific technology such as determined by an IEP or educational specialist. Housekeeping - Students will maintain the classroom in a clean orderly manner. Oversized pictures of different areas of the classroom will be posted showing how the classroom should look at the end of the day. Students will be instructed to pick up trash, papers, stack chairs, etc. according to how the class is represented in the pictures. Dismissal – After students have cleaned up classroom and packed up their belongings, they will line up according to being picked up/car rider, afterschool/extracurrilcular activities, and bus rider. I will accompany the students to their designated area of dismissal. Consequences Positive reinforcement will be key in my classroom. Being proactive and looking for triggers among students will be my goal and negative behaviors will be dealt with by using emotional objectivity. Eye contact, verbal reminders, constructive assertiveness, and proximity will all primarily be used to maintain an orderly classroom. Various self- regulation programs and/or peer intervention techniques along with a rewards program will be implemented to address behavior issues. “A Stop and Think” poster will be visible for me to direct students to look at when negative behavior occurs. The poster will read STOP AND THINK Is my behavior the right thing to do? What else can I do? When should I do it? NOW! I will also regularly and continuously call out students individually for displaying and modeling appropriate behavior. This will incentivize students that are misbehaving to modify their own behavior on how to earn positive praise from the teacher. Nonverbal cues such as a smile, pat on the back, high fives will also encourage positive behavior. I will also use a “Fill the bucket” reward system where students will be able to place a small puff ball in a bucket for showing exemplary behavior. Once the bucket is full, the students will have a choice of a special activity such as a movie day or pizza party. Negative consequences will sometimes be necessary to address students with behavioral issues after given several chances to modify their behavior. My class will have a “cool off zone” that students who exhibit inappropriate behavior will be sent to in order to calm down and reflect. Negative consequences will be as follows: First offense – A warning preferably in private, but may be public if disruption occurs during instruction. Second offense – Student will be given a choice to cease inappropriate behavior or go to cool down zone. Third offense – Student will go to “cool down zone” and write a letter of apology regarding behavior and how they will remedy in the future. Fourth offense – Student will be given a choice of losing time during recess or be placed in silent lunch. Fifth offense – Student will be sent home with a letter describing inappropriate behavior for parent/caregiver to sign and return. instructed to go to the main office to inform the principal, vice-principal, or human resource officer of the situation. Student accidents/emergencies – The school nurse will be contacted immediately regarding the situation. Students will be instructed to move away from the student having the episode and an assessment will be made to determine which procedure (basic first aid, CPR, AED) should be used until other staff members arrive to assist. Unruly students – Should there be behaviorally out of control student(s), the remaining students will be instructed to leave the classroom and stand against the adjacent wall to the classroom. Two students will be instructed to let a neighboring teacher know of the situation and two students will be instructed to go to the office to inform the principal, vice-principal, or human resource officer of the situation. I will remain in the classroom with the unruly student and attempt to de-escalate the situation until other staff members arrive. Lockdown procedure – In the event of a notification of a threat on school grounds, the classroom door will be locked from inside, wedged at the bottom of door, and a desk that is strategically placed will be pushed to provide a barricade. Students will be instructed to move and sit in a location in the classroom away from the door and windows. Students will periodically practice periodically these procedures in addition to the school wide drills. Elopement –Should a student have an issue with sporadically leaving the classroom, I will use the walkie-talkie radio provided by school to inform principal, vice-principal, or human resource officer of situation. If walkie-talkie radio is misplaced or unavailable, I will designate two students to inform neighboring teacher of incident, inform the class to continue working, and pursue student. If the flight tendencies are known ahead of time, the student will be placed as far away from classroom door as possible along with several obstacles to prevent leaving. Classroom management is a vital key component in an elementary educational setting which is crucial to student learning and a productive, successful school year. My management plan will incorporate differentiated classroom techniques and procedures that will be reinforced with positivity and encouragement for students to help one another by promoting teamwork and collaboration. It is my duty as a professional teacher to provide a safe, challenging, productive, and engaging learning environment for each and every student. It is also my goal to have students in a stress-free environment, be comfortable to ask questions, and to not feel like they are being judged. I will engage students to bring them out of their comfort zones so that they will be a part of their learning as I am a big believer in the saying, “Mistakes are proof that you are trying.” Every student learns in his or her own way, so there will be utilization of various differentiated classroom management strategies to insure every student is learning the curriculum. When dealing with behavioral issues, my responses will be with firmness, calmness, and consistency. It will be my goal to teach students how to act, react, and think about their actions and whether they are acceptable. Dealing with over twenty different personalities throughout the year, flexibility and adaptability will need to be utilized to make a safe, productive, and consistent learning environment for every student. Review of the rules and procedures will be done in collaboration with the students to insure they are aligned with educational goals. My classroom management plan is a continuous work in progress based upon reflections of the different challenges that will surely arise throughout the school year. References
